Records tumble in the heat at CC Breckland 12-hour time trial
It was a hard hot day for a twelve hour time trial at the CC Breckland event and while several records fell, other attempts fell by the wayside, writes Fergus Muir.
New records were set by, for instance, John Golder who celebrated his retirement from work with a lifetime personal best of 265 miles exactly, beating the Veteran’s TTA national age record for 65 year-olds.
Even at 11 hours the Chelmer CC man was verbally urging himself on as he almost sprinted out of the circuit turn at Watton, and every yard proved to be needed as the record was only beaten a narrow margin.
Christina Mackenzie, part of a large team from the Stirling bike Club which travelled from Scotland, went home with a new Scottish Ladies record of 256.28 miles.
Men’s winner Charles Mitchell (310.79 miles) led his Portsmouth Road-based team A3 crg to a new national team record.
On the other hand Andy Wilkinson (Port Sunlight Whs) held competition record pace for six hours but was beaten by back and neck pain as he pounded over the course – mainly on the Thetford to Wymondham road.
By the end of the event talk of the day probably centred on Becky Murley’s 256.99 miles which won the East District Women’s Championship for the popular Wisbech Wheeler – who had urged her dad to douse her feet in cold water each time she passed.
Men’s EDCA Champion was Thetford rider Dave Green (289.57). He had held a 300 mile schedule for eight hours, but was having to stop each lap on the finishing circuit to have a bucket of water poured over him.
Meanwhile, Chris Tye of the Plomesgate CC nevertheless covered 255.14 miles and Paul Vickers (West Suffolk Wheelers) 254.49.
The surprise of the King’s Lynn 25 was the entry from pro Harry Tanfield. Riding for his Teesside home club of Cleveland Wheelers the Tour Series race winner and Commonwealth Games track champion duly smashed the course record for the Fincham to Mundford and back course, knocking over three minutes off to finish in 50:15 on a day of which Steve Cave (Plomesgate CC, 58:36) said: “If the heat didn’t get you, the strong headwind for the uphill return leg would.”
There is an “Evening with Harry Tanfield” at the Maglia Rosso Cafe/Bike shop at Hawstead near Bury on the evening of Friday 17th August. Tickets (£5) are limited and need to be booked with the shop.
In the Videre RT evening road races on August 1st Charlie Wright (Strada Sport) outsprinted Matt Webster to take the Senior Men’s race, where there was a fifth spot for Adam Colbert (Ipswich BC).
Charlie Jones of DAP CC took the race for Third & Fourth Cats in a bunch sprint in which Will Cunningham (Stowmarket & District) was second and Videre’s Joseph Kaye fourth. Clover Murray (LIV AWOL) won the women’s race.
Jones was in action again in a very hot Redbridge CC road race in Essex where a final fourth place lifts the Lowestoft rider up to the coveted Second Category status.
Jones’ DAP teammate Mark Richards featured in a long two-rider breakaway, but the field eventually came back together, with Jim Burgin making a last lap solo break to win alone, with Chris Crabtree (Orwell Velo, 7th) top local finisher.
Finally, it is sad to be reporting the death of Wolsey Road Club member Don Forsbrook who has died at the age of 89.
Having started racing as a teenager with the Audnam CC in the west Midlands, Don’s work for ICI brought him to Suffolk in the 1960s.
He joined Suffolk CTC and when his interest in time-trialling was re-kindled in 1979 he joined the Wolsey RC. He continued to race against the clock into his early eighties, riding beautifully maintained bikes that became classics and was made a vice-president of the Wolsey for his services to the club.
