Josh Mayhew is targeting a run in the FA Vase with Stowmarket Town next season after signing a two-year deal to stay with the club until 2020, writes Alex Moss.

The Stow striker enjoyed a prolific first campaign at Greens Meadow, finishing up as the Thurlow Nunn League’s top goalscorer with 56 goals in all competitions, and over the weekend committed his immediate future to the Old Gold and Blacks.

And although promotion will be the target for Rick Andrews’ side in 2018-19, after ending their first season back in the Premier Division in third place earlier this month, Mayhew has also outlined his intentions to make significant progress in next season’s FA Vase.

“The attitude most of the players had towards the end of the season when promotion was out of our hands was that we want to win the league rather than finish second,” Mayhew said.

“Of course, it would of be nice to go up, but everyone wants to win the league and it gives us a motivation this year to go and do it.

“Hopefully we can also have a good run in the Vase as well. We had a poor start last season and kind of missed out on all the cup games, so it would be nice to have a cup run as well.

“We didn’t do ourselves credit at all in the Vase, so getting a good start and being top from the start, rather than chasing, would be nice next season.”

Four of Mayhew’s 56 goals last season came in the FA Vase, two in the 7-0 win against Team Bury, followed by another two in a 5-4 defeat to Enfield 1893.

Stow had battled back from 2-0 down to lead Enfield 4-2 in the second qualifying round tie, before the Essex Senior League side scored in the last seconds of both normal time and extra time to dump Andrews’ men out of the national cup competition.

Stow have won just three FA Vase ties in the last 14 years, with their best run being to the fourth round back in 1982-83.
