One league win in seven and Stowmarket Town boss Rick Andrews knows now is not the time for his side to feel sorry for themselves.

Stowmarket travel to high-flying Saffron Walden this afternoon (3pm ko), looking to kick-start their Thurlow Nunn Division One season which has started to falter of late after a promising start.

A top-10 finish – and entrance to next season’s FA Cup – is Andrews’ hope and he is confident his side can string together some results to achieve that goal.

“Just a couple of weeks ago we produced our best result and performance of the season when we won at Halstead,” he said.

“Our game management needs to improve if we want to get results. We are a bit gung-ho at times but it’s no good feeling sorry for ourselves.”

Stowmarket have had two defeats to Norfolk teams in recent weeks, Downham (3-1) last week and Swaffham (8-2), the week previous.

Although disappointed, Andrews isn’t deflated by either performance.

“Sadly, for us, the game is not about possession because we had plenty of it in both of those matches,” Andrews said.

“Against Saffron they had about 10 shots and scored eight of them. We were all level with Downham and they got two late goals.

“We are not being hammered by anyone, despite the look of the Swaffham result and I have complete faith in my players – they can pull out of this run.”

Stowmarket have a better away league record than home right now, with five of their nine victories coming on the road.

Tomorrow they are going to need to use all their away-day guile if they are to get anything from a Saffron Walden side who have enjoyed cup and FA Vase success this season.

“Saffron Walden are a good team,” Andrews added.

“They have had some great cup runs this season. But we gave them a good game at our place earlier in the season.”
