Rick Andrews has backed Stowmarket Town striker Josh Mayhew to break the Thurlow Nunn League record for most goals scored in a season - if he can stay injury free, writes Alex Moss.
Stow are set to return to action after a three-week break when they host Thetford Town at Greens Meadow tomorrow afternoon (3pm), with Mayhew’s goal tally standing at an impressive 39 in just 34 games.
Records on the Thurlow Nunn League website show that Matthew Metcalf, the former Brentford striker, scored the most goals in a single season with his 50-goal tally for Wroxham in the 1992-93 campaign.
“Obviously his goalscoring has been nothing less than phenomenal at this level,” Stow boss Andrews said.
“But I think Josh would be the first to acknowledge that he’s surrounded by good players, who are creating the chances for him.
“I always knew what Josh was capable of and I knew if you surrounded him with the right people you’d give him chances.
“Full credit to him, I think we’ve got 17 games left and if he can stay injury free you’d like to think he’d be pushing for that top spot, certainly second as he only needs six or seven goals to beat second.
“I think for him personally it would be fantastic. It’s not an individual game, it’s about the team, but if individuals pick up awards on the way and they’re doing it playing for a team of mine, that’s good for him and the club.”
After seeing their trip to Wivenhoe Town postponed, followed by a free weekend, Andrews says his players are itching to get back on the pitch and to try and keep up their recent run of form.
The 7-1 thrashing of Fakenham Town at Greens Meadow three weeks ago stretched Stow’s winning run to six games, and put them back up to second in the Premier Division table.
Although Andrews’ side have dropped a couple of places to fourth since then, Felixstowe & Walton United, Coggeshall Town and Brantham Athletic, the three sides above them, have all dropped points in recent weeks.
