Leiston manager Richard Wilkins has revealed he is looking to bring in two or three new additions before the start of the new Ryman Premier Division season.
Wilkins guided the Victory Road outfit to a second, successive ninth-placed finish last season, having taken over from Steve Ball midway through the campaign.
Having retained the majority of that squad, Wilkins isn’t keen to make wholesale additions and believes just a handful of fresh faces are required.
“We managed to get John Sands and Seb Dunbar towards the end of last season and they filled two areas that needed to be covered,” said former Bury Town boss Wilkins. I am looking at bringing in two or three players as we are going along fairly well, so there is no need to go and rip things up.
“There’s plenty of talking going on at the moment, but not a lot of action and players seem to be biding their time. I am sure one or two signings will get everything moving along.
“I would like to think I am pretty close to signing a couple of players but, while they are not signed, you can be jumped by another team.
“Fans of every club want to see signings at this stage of the year but we have got to be patient.”
One player who won’t be part of the set-up next year is former Witham Town and Hadleigh United striker Josh Mayhew, while Wilkins is waiting to learn the decisions of two or three other players who are considering their futures.
One of those players is goalkeeper Danny Gay, who may choose to move to a club closer to his home.
“The big issue is Danny Gay,” explained Wilkins.
“He lives at King’s Lynn, there is a bit of travelling involved, and he has just become a father for the first time.
“It’s all part of the game. Sometimes these things take longer than you would like, but it may be that he wants to play closer to home.”
Wilkins added: “Leon Otley-Gooch, Danny Cunningham and Blake Saker are all signed on for the new season, but Josh Mayhew has left the club.
“He will no doubt come back stronger, while there are a couple of lads that are still undecided.”
