Leiston boss Glenn Driver looking to avoid FA Cup banana skin shock at Aylesbury
Leiston travel to Aylesbury tomorrow looking to avoid the classic banana skin cup shock.
Unbeaten in the Bostick Premier, Glenn Driver’s side are understandably in confident mood after their Bank Holiday Monday victory against local rivals Lowestoft Town.
But this weekend it’s the small matter of the FA Cup and a £3,000 purse that awaits the winner as the Cup enters the First Qualifying Round stage.
Aylesbury are a Step below Leiston in the pyramid and have yet to win a league match this season – banana skin is written all over it for Leiston – it’s what the FA Cup is all about, even at this level. Something Driver is well aware of.
“We know the issues we could have at Aylesbury and we will be taking this game as seriously and with the same preparation we did against Dulwich Hamlet and Lowestoft over the weekend, and all our games,” he said.
“In the league you play perhaps 44 or 46 games and you get plenty of chances to put things right. But in the FA Cup there is only that one chance, you have to take it.
“The Football Association get plenty of stick, but they have upped the prize money in the FA Cup considerably at grass roots level over the last few years and they should be congratulated on that.
“For us, £3,000 is a lot of money and we want to make sure we put a proper performance in and win it.”
Leiston are boosted by the return of both Matt Blake and Chris Henderson to the squad after both missed the Blues victory over the Trawlermen on Monday
“It’s great to have them both back,” Driver said.
“We did well at Lowestoft, a team who are a real bogey side for me personally. I don’t think I ever beat them as a player and not until Monday had I as a manager.
“But we were well worth the win and it’s been a decent start to the season for us.”
Leiston have a good recent FA Cup pedigree, reaching the First Round back in 2008 where they lost to Fleetwood after a replay.
Last season they lost to Westfields in the Fourth Qualifying Round, just one step away from the First Round proper.
