It’s been a relatively small turnover of players at Portman Road during this Covid-19 affected window, with five in (David Cornell, Stephen Ward, Oli Hawkins, Mark McGuinness and Keanan Bennetts) and five out (Will Norris, Luke Garbutt, Danny Rowe, Jordan Roberts and Will Keane).

That should have left the Blues boss with a healthy sized senior squad of 28 players, but with Flynn Downes, Cole Skuse, James Norwood and Aaron Drinan all ruled out for months, the central midfield and striker options have been greatly reduced for what will be a busy and important schedule.

Asked if he might look to strengthen, Lambert said: “With the salary cap threshold now there’s no way we can do it. Even if somebody left the football club we can’t get anybody in, you can’t spend the money.

“The salary cap should never, ever have happened. For whatever reason it has though and don’t envisage anyone else coming in here now.”

He added: “The finances are really, really difficult. The club did a really good deal (loan deal with Borussia Monchengladbach) for Keanan Bennetts – it’s not expensive for us at all.”

Jon Nolan sat out Saturday’s 4-1 win at Blackpool with a calf strain, leaving no midfielders on the bench. Asked whether he felt he had another players in that position for the next few months, the Blues boss said: “We don’t know. Emyr (Huws) is still pushing everybody (Andre Dozzell, Nolan and Teddy Bishop) to get in. (Alan) Judgey can play there as well, so we’ve still got a few numbers in there.

“Gibbo (Liam Gibbs) and Brett (McGavin) done really well the other night (in the EFL Trophy), but I don’t want to put pressure on those kids. Hopefully we don’t get any more injuries that’s for sure.”

Town have got four young players out on loan at the moment in Harry Wright, Adam Przybek, Bailey Clements and Idris El Mizouni.

Lambert is still keen to find a good loan club for Armando Dobra, the talented youngster having been linked to League Two club Crawley Town.

It remains to be seen whether plans to loan out Corrie Ndaba, Brett McGavin and Ben Folami are put on hold.
