Ipswich Town will face Luton away in the first round of the League Cup, while Colchester United will host Aston Villa.

The draw for the competition, to be known as the Carabao Cup as part of a new three-year sponsorship deal with the Thai energy drink brand, took place in Bangkok this afternoon.

Ipswich were one of the seeds for the southern section, while Colchester were non-seeds.

Nathan Jones’ Luton finished fourth in League Two last season before losing to Blackpool in the play-off semi-finals, while Aston Villa finished 13th in the Championship following relegation.

Altogether 70 clubs went into the hat, with Championship new boys Hull and Middlesbrough joining the Premier League clubs in round two.

Ties are to be played in the week commencing August 7, most likely the Tuesday night following the opening weekend of the season.

Ipswich have been drawn against Stevenage in three of the past four years, losing twice. Colchester lost 4-0 at Brighton in the first round last August.
