Jonny Williams is set to make his second bow for Ipswich Town at Sheffield Wednesday tonight, as Mick McCarthy continues to tinker with a winning formula.

Williams, 20, penned a loan deal with the Blues yesterday and, provided he is not recalled after the initial 28-day period, will stay at Portman Road until January.

McCarthy has altered his team over the last week to good effect, with Kevin Bru and Paul Anderson the latest beneficiaries of the Blues’ boss rotation policy, in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Rotherham.

However, Williams is unlikely to be a player who comes in and out of the team.

The Welsh international added much-needed craft to a team that was suffering from the loss of injured talisman, David McGoldrick last season.

The duo will finally get the chance to play together and McCarthy said: “If you think Jonny Williams, as good as he was the last time, is going to be sat warming the bench during his loan, then that’s not going to happen.

“It will give everyone a lift and boost, on the back of the results, seeing him coming him, knowing the quality he has.

“If we can get out of him what he did the last time, or he can contribute what he did the last time, we will be delighted.”

McCarthy, however, stressed the importance of having plenty of options.

“I want to keep a winning 11, and I have not been scratching around, changing things because I had to,” said McCarthy.

“I changed it because of the games we were playing and the lads have put a real shift in.

“The ability to put fresh legs in who know their job and what they are doing, and who are not going in because someone is injured, is relatively new to me and it’s nice to have that option.

“Andy Liddell (fitness coach) looks after them and tops up the fitness of players that don’t play, which is important.”
