Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has left the door open to a possible return for Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams.
The Welsh international, 20, scored once in 13 league appearances on loan, as the Blues just missed out on the Championship play-off spots this season.
However Williams’ energetic performances made him a fans’ favourite during his short spell, at Portman Road and, with his future at Selhurst Park unclear, McCarthy has declared an early interest in bringing the Kent-born player back to the club.
Asked whether there was a chance of seeing Williams, who is under contract with Tony Pulis’ side until 2017, in a blue shirt again, McCarthy said: “I haven’t a clue.
“We all love him, we’d all love him back, but there will be others who would love to have him as well.
“That’s just the way it is. There might be Premier League clubs that want to take him, Tony (Pulis) might want to have a look at him. Who knows?
“He’s done himself no harm has he? He’s been fabulous.
“We’d take him back at the drop of a hat. We’d love to have him back, of course. But that’s not my decision.”
Williams, Palace’s Young Player of the Year in the 2012-13 campaign, is the most recent in a number of successful loan signings made by McCarthy during his tenure.
Despite not wanting to be reliant on temporary signings, McCarthy, who has benefited from bringing the likes of Richard Stearman, David McGoldrick, Stephen Henderson, Paul Green and Frazer Richardson in on-loan during his time at Portman Road, confessed that he would look down that route again.
“We’ll certainly look at loan deals with Premier League players,” said McCarthy, who will offer young Manchester City loan winger Alex Henshall a deal in the summer.
“Look at the quality that Jonny Williams has brought us.
“If we could get a couple like that, not necessarily his position, then I think that is going to help us.”
n Colchester United will host Ipswich Town in a pre-season at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, on Wednesday July 23, with a 7.30pm kick-off.
