Ipswich Town’s bitter rivals, Norwich City, have made an official enquiry for ex-Blues striker, Daryl Murphy, according to the Northern Echo.

Murphy scored seven times in 26 games for Newcastle last season, having moved to the North East from Portman Road in August, but has been told by Magpies’ boss Rafa Benitez that he is not part of his plans as the club prepare for a return to the Premier League.

Newcastle are thought to be looking to recoup a big chunk of the fee they paid Ipswich and Norwich could return for the man they targeted two years ago, before the Republic of Ireland international signed a new deal at Portman Road.

Last week, Blues boss Mick McCarthy said it was highly unlikely the Blues would be able to bring Murphy back to Carrow Road, given his salary at Newcastle, and suggested his former club Sunderland, for whom the frontman also played, should take a punt on the Waterford-born man.
