The chances of Ipswich Town re-signing Jonny Williams may have been dealt a blow, following the Welshman's performance in Crystal Palace's 3-2 League Cup defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday night.

Williams played 80 minutes before being replaced by substitute Sulley Kaikai who scored the Eagles’ equaliser to take the game into extra-time.

The 20-year-old quickly became a fans’ favourite at Portman Road last season, during a successful loan spell, but Palace boss Neil Warnock admits the midfielder may have given him a selection headache, ahead of the south London club’s home game with Leicester on Saturday, and could be pushing Mile Jedinak and Joe Ledley for a midfield spot.

“We just couldn’t have played anyone who had featured at Everton because of the amount of work we did up there,” said Warnock.

“So considering we made 11 changes we performed very well.

“I know people expected that would weaken us but the way the lads performed, I honestly don’t think it did.

“So we’ve got a lot of players going well and now I’ve got problems with who I can leave out to be honest.

“Guys like Barry Bannan and Jonny Williams went well so that will make selection tough, and that’s a great problem to have.”

Earlier this month, Blues boss Mick McCarthy said of Williams: “If somebody says you can have him on loan, I’d take him. Everybody knows that.

“And by the way, so would 23 other Championship clubs. He was a sub and got on at the weekend for Palace, so he was part of their plans.”
