Newcastle United have beaten off competition from North-East rivals Middlesbrough to sign Wayne Routledge on a three-and-a-half year contract.

The winger has joined Chris Hughton's side for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £1m, from QPR and will go straight into the Magpies squad to face Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening.

Routledge had reportedly been due to meet Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan for talks over a move but rejected the Scot's overtures in favour of a move to St James' Park.
