Colchester United v Mansfield Town, nostalgia: Scott McGleish pounces with a late winner

Colchester United writer Carl Marston recalls the U’s vital 1-0 home win over Mansfield Town, on February 14, 2003.
Scott McGleish scored the vital goal as managerless Colchester narrowly defeated the Stags 1-0 in a Friday night tussle under the Layer Road lights.
McGleish nodded home the only goal of the game in the 88th minute to earn the U’s their first home win for four months against fellow relegation strugglers Mansfield.
Most of the excitement was condensed into a 60-minute period towards the end of the game.
The visitors were cursing their luck when Adam Eaton’s spectacular 25-yard shot cannoned back off a post, with keeper Simon Brown well beaten, in the 87th minute.
Play immediately switched to the other end, where substitute Gareth Williams capped a strong run with a powerful shot that was blocked by keeper Keith Welsh.
The rebound fell kindly for goal-poacher McGleish, who headed into the roof of the net to secure all three points for the hosts.
It was certainly a boost for caretaker manager Geraint Williams, who had been in temporary charge since Steve Whitton’s exit on January 29.
Williams had presided over a draw at Stockport, and then back-to-back wins at Bristol City (2-1) and Mansfield, to give his chances of landing the job full-time a boost, although ultimately it was to be Phil Parkinson who was appointed.
