Sammie Szmodics is on cloud nine at the moment. He's the talk of the town, the man of the moment, the subject of transfer speculation, and he's beginning to pick up some awards.
Colchester United’s in-form attacker, who earlier this week was linked with a £1million move to Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth, has been confirmed as the EFL’s League Two player-of-the-month for December.
Szmodics was “over the moon” to receive the award, having been nominated alongside Lincoln City target man Matt Rhead, Morecambe striker Callum Lang and Luton Town defender Alan Sheehan.
The 22-year-old has also been nominated for the PFA player-of-the-month award, which is voted for the fans, so the recognition is starting to increase.
It is a big test, therefore, for Szmodics to stay grounded, and put all the transfer speculation and awards to one side, to concentrate on the matter in hand – continuing to score goals and to win football matches for Colchester United.
“It’s brilliant to get this award, and to be spoken about,” enthused Szmodics.
“The gaffer pulled me to one side in training on Tuesday and told me that I had been nominated, and I was over-the-moon.
“It was also a confidence booster to know that I have won it.
“It’s good to be recognised, not only by Colchester United but by the FA in general.”
Szmodics was an unused substitute during last Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Cheltenham, and has only trained once this week, but he is hopeful of returning to the side for tomorrow’s trip to Wycombe.
John McGreal was nominated for the League Two December manager-of-the-month award, although that has been won by Lincoln’s Danny Cowley.
