Here are five things to learn from Colchester United’s League Two fixture list for 2017-18. The fixtures were unveiled this morning.
No 1: Hard month:
December will not be an easy one for the U’s.
There are three very awkward-looking away games, at newly-relegated Swindon Town (Decmber 16), a Boxing Day jaunt to Crawley and a trip to Chesterfield.
Hopefully, though, the home games against Exeter and Port Vale will bring some light relief.
No. 2: Easy month
I’m looking to October as a potential month for picking up a host of points.
The U’s have three very win-able home fixtures, against Mansfield, Carlisle and Crewe.
They do have a midweek away test at Newport (Tuesday, October 17), but I always fancy the U’s chances at their other hosts for October (Coventry City).
No. 3: Main rivals
The U’s are away at local rivals Cambridge United on Saturday, September 2, while Cambridge are due at the Community Stadium on New Year’s Day.
No. 4: First visits
The U’s will visit Forest Green Rovers for the first-ever time on Easter Monday, April 2 (I went to the New Lawn with Braintree Town a few years ago, for a midweek fixture, and was very impressed). The U’s will meet Forest Green for the first time in a home fixture on August 26.
No. 5: Busy month
As always. September will be a month packed with fixtures – seven league games are planned for that month, not including potential League Cup ties!
There are four away trips in September, to Cambridge, Cheltenham, Grimsby and Yeovil.
