West Norfolk non-league round-up: ‘Favourites’ Downham Town ready for Norfolk Senior Cup battle

Downham Town turn their attentions to the Norfolk Senior Cup this weekend, looking forward to going into the game carrying the tag of favourites.
Town visit Anglian Combination Premier Division Reepham in the fourth round (1.45pm kick-off).
Assistant boss Pete Brassett said: “It’s their big game and they want to get a scalp. We need to be at it. For the last two years we’ve been knocked out by sides in the Ang Comb, –St Andrews and Blofield, even though they play a level lower than us.
“We’re going to have to roll our sleeves up and prepare for a battle. It won’t be pretty. But as long as we’re in the hat by the end of the game, even if we need a replay, I’ll be happy.”
Town go into the game on the back of a 3-2 home win over Stowmarket in the Thurlow Nunn First Division, thanks to goals debutant David Coyle, JD Cooling Systems man of the match Matthew Dye and Matty Bussens.
“We were fantastic for the first 15 minutes and went 2-0 up,” said Brassett. “But we took our foot off the gas. They scored and then did so again after about 80 minutes. At that point we’d have settled for a point. But a little bit of magic from Matty Bussens, just like he did against Yarmouth, got us all three points, when a draw was probably fair.”
Brassett was delighted with debutant Coyle, a former FC Clacton player/manager and a Norwich City youth-team coach.
“David gives us something a bit different,” he said. “He’s 6ft 2in, 30, and is a more experienced lad.
“He holds the ball up and brings people into the game. He’s also an aerial threat and he scored from a long throw-in when he flicked it into the net. He brought the best out of Dye and Bussens as they could give him the ball and then join in. He’s a voice, a character and his constructive criticism and nous is needed.”
Swaffham moved up to fourth in the table after a 6-1 win at March Town.
Dean Miller, Jack Redhead and Joe Jackson put Swaffham in control before March pulled one back, but on the stroke of half-time Redhead scored from the spot, before Lee Woolmore and Alex Vincent wrapped it up.
Anglian Combination Premier League Dersingham Rovers travel to Wroxham on Saturday.
