A few pint glasses in The Crown, Claydon were raised when the Division One side drew SIL Senior Division champions Crane Sports in the quarter-finals of the Bob Coleman Cup.
The pair meet in the last eight of the competition this Saturday (2pm kick off), and for Claydon boss, Kenny Kennedy, there could not have been a better draw.
“We were delighted to get the opportunity to play Cranes,” said Kennedy, whose side are the current Division One leaders.
“There was an awful lot of cheering in our local pub, The Crown, when we found out!
“We wanted either Achilles or Cranes, and to get last year’s reigning champions is going to be a real challenge for us, we cannot wait.”
Kennedy continued: “This game is going to be a welcome break from the league for us.
“Our aim is to win Division One and gain promotion, and whatever we do in the Bob Coleman Cup is a bonus.
“I’m glad we are at home too as our pitch enables us to get the ball down and play, we are really looking forward to it.”
Claydon have already claimed a Senior Division scalp en route to this stage of the compeition, defeating Stanton 3-1.
“The lads were really up for it against Stanton, and I’m expecting them to be again against Cranes,” continued Kennedy.
“We flew out of the blocks, and no disrespect to Stanton, but we played so well against them that they cannot argue with the result.
“Everyone is champing at the bit to try and topple Cranes, and if we don’t (win), it doesn’t matter, we’re not expected to.”
Claydon are one of three Division One teams trying to upset Senior Division in this competition on Saturday.
AFC Kesgrave travel to Coplestonians, while Benhall St Mary visit Wenhaston.
“Benhall are a good side,” said Kennedy.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to see them beat Wenhaston, but I think AFC Kesgrave have a tougher test.
“It would be great for the league if all three of us could get into the semi-finals.”
The fourth Bob Coleman Cup tie sees Achilles visit East Bergholt United.
