IPSWICH Wanderers will not underestimate Crane Sports in tomorrow’s LB Group Suffolk Senior Cup semi-final tie.

Terry Fenwick, who is in his second season as chairman, said the Thurlow Nunn League Division One side are anxious to avoid slipping on the proverbial potential banana skin against their lower league opponents.

Fenwick said: “We go into the game as favourites, but we know it will not be an easy match.

“Hopefully it will be a good game, but we are expecting a battle, especially in the midfield.

“We have watched them and know they are a good side, especially with Danny Phillips upfront, and we will not underestimate them whatsoever.”

Fenwick spelt out the importance of tomorrow’s tie to the Humber Doucy Lane club, whose only previous final appearance was a 4-1 defeat to Haverhill Rovers in the 1996/97 season.

He said: “It is very important for everyone at the club, especially manager Glenn Read and assistant Steve Jay and with it being the first major cup semi-final they have got to.

“It will be a great achievement for everyone if we get to the final – the managers, players, supporters and our new sponsors Lindacre Land Rovers – and it will be fantastic for myself as chairman to watch my club play at Portman Road.

“If we do reach the final it would be great to play Whitton because of the rivalry between the two clubs that goes back years like Ipswich and Norwich.

“But there is a potential banana skin somewhere in the two semi-finals and hopefully it will not be us who slip on it.”

Wanderers will be without striker James Heathcote, who has a hamstring injury, while Ben Green and Liam Bevis are cup-tied after previously playing for Debenham LC and Whitton United respectively in the competition.

However, left winger Danny Allen, who joined Wanderers from Hadleigh United, will be involved.
