Lakenheath lifted the Suffolk FA Senior Cup sponsored by Queensway thanks to a record 7-0 victory over Ipswich Valley Rangers in Saturday’s final.

Since the competition was first played for in the 1885-86 season, only twice had the final been won by a six-goal margin.

The Kershaw Cambridgeshire League Premier Division side re-wrote the record books as they demolished Ipswich Valley Rangers in the final at Bury Town FC.

IVR had no answer to Lakenheath strikers Luke Catchpole, who opened the scoring, and Matt Hayden, who helped himself to a hat-trick including two penalties.

The Touchline SIL Senior Division side, who were playing in their first final, could count themselves unfortunate to be trailing 1-0 at the interval.

But after conceding a second goal eight minutes after the restart they fell apart and were left shell-shocked by the final whistle.

Lakenheath led at half time courtesy of Catchpole’s smart turn on the edge of the penalty area and crisp cross-shot into the bottom far corner after 16 minutes.

Either side of the goal IVR had struck the top of the crossbar through a looping Harry Wales header and then as James Blade slid in at full stretch to reach Clark Bruce’s low cross.

Hayden and Catchpole both went close just before the break, but there was no sign at that stage of what would unfold over the second period.

In the 53rd minute Catchpole got away down the left and lifted the ball over to Hayden, who took his time, sidestepped a defender and fired past Lewis Higgins.

Nine minutes later it was 3-0, Hayden’s waist-high driven cross diverting in off the unfortunate Jon Ince under pressure from Catchpole.

Adam Place then rifled home from the edge of the area a minute later, and substitute Josh Green fired home in the 70th minute after the ball had broken to him in the box.

IVR lost playmaker Seth Duzgun, who had been the best player on the pitch, through injury before conceding two soft penalties to confirm it was just not their day.

James Gosling was penalised for handball in the 83rd minute and Wales for a trip on Tony Wright six minutes later, Hayden scoring from the spot with ease on both occasions to complete his hat-trick.

The cup and medals were presented by Lee Harding of competition sponsors Queensway and Suffolk FA chairman David Porter.
