Whitton United boss Shane Coldron is looking for a run of league games to kick-start the Green’s Thurlow Nunn Premier campaign.

The Ipswich-based side sit third bottom in the table, having been promoted last season. They have won just one game.

Ironically below them are the two other promoted sides from last season, Woodbridge and Framlingham.

Whitton entertain Walsham-le-Willows this weekend and then Fram on Tuesday night.

Two big games for Coldron’s side.

“We’ve been hampered by long-term injuries to key players all season so far to be honest,” he said.

“There have been so many cup games as well. It’s just put us off balance. We haven’t got any consistency going. But I’m not unduly worried.

“It’s a tough run of three league games this week, Walsham, Fram and then Ely. It would be good to take seven points from that. But even five points wouldn’t be a problem.”

Coldron helped guide Whitton to promotion last season and has put much of his faith in young players.

He’s not alone in that strategy in this day and age as more and more clubs look to develop their own youngsters.

“Most of my players are under-23 and we are looking to build good relationships with other clubs around us,” Coldron said.

“We have missed crucial players, as I have said. And hope to have Jack Newman back soon.

“We are short of goals and at Histon last week, despite going down to 10 men, we had far more chances than they did in the second half. We just didn’t take them.

“And at this level, you will get punished for that.”

In other games in Thurlow Premier, Brantham, after their FA Cup exploits, return to league action at home to Ely, while Hadleigh travel to Thetford. Basement side Framlingham face a trip up the A12 to Great Yarmouth looking for their first win of the season. Woodbridge will be buoyed by achieving just that last weekend at Wroxham.

This weekend they face a stiff test against Godmanchester. In the First Division Debenham entertain Leiston Reserves, while Ipswich Wanderers entertain Wisbech St Mary.
