The Kent Blaxill Border league secured their first victory - a 1-0 success at Ipswich Wanderers’ ground on Wednesday night - over the Touchline SIL since 2004 as a good-sized crowd witnessed a very entertaining, quick game.
The visitors were well represented by several Gas Recreation players whereas the SIL selected from several clubs in order for managers Ian Watson and Kevin Cunningham to cast their eyes over a squad in preparation for the forthcoming FA Inter League match in April against West Riding Yorkshire.
The SIL had an early chance when Adam Rickwood headed against the post from a Matt Cunningham free kick before the same player had two other shots go narrowly over the bar as the home side pushed the visitors onto the back foot. Keeper Adam Wilson shone throughout the game with impressive saves and good handling.
The visitors found space behind the defence in the first half when Chatters and Thorne had shots saved but Leigh Hammond and Chris Pratt were keeping the Border League forwards at bay. With substitutes used in the second half the SIL lost some momentum whereas the visitors appeared to step up their game and Dillon bossed the midfield creating more chances for Greenley, Thorne and Chatters.
Midway through the second half the SIL should have scored with Adam Rickwood, Sam Taylor and Matty Morgan having shots blocked by the keeper and defence. As the visitors gained more possession and control a cross from Thorne on 80 minutes found Chatters who headed in from close range to secure the victory.
The provisional date for the FA Inter League preliminary round against West Riding County Amateur League is April 6 at Hadleigh United’s Millfield ground.
