IPSWICH Town manager Paul Jewell says his players’ work-rate was at the heart of their shock 5-1 win over league-leaders West Ham at Portman Road tonight.
A much-improved crowd of 22,185 (2,063 were in the away end) were treated to a display full of energy, desire and – most importantly – improved quality in both boxes from Town.
And the lacklustre Londoners saw their number of away goals conceded rocket from 11 to 16 in the space of a memorable evening as a result.
With Michael Chopra, Daryl Murphy, Lee Martin and Jayt Emmanuel-Thomas (2) doing the damage, Jewell said: “It’s nice to get a result but when you get a performance as well, it’s all the sweeter. They’re a good team, West Ham, they’ll get promoted, I’ve no doubt about that.”
Asked cheekily if he’d like to play the table-toppers every week – Town winning the reverse fixture 1-0 last September – Jewell added: “I was just thinking that but I didn’t want to say in case I sounded arrogant!
“We started the game well, although we rode our luck from one or two set plays. I think it was a victory for hard work and determination. We worked exceptionally hard.
“Our last two games against Blackpool and Leeds, we were the same – we hunted in packs and we set about West Ham, that was the game plan.
“We didn’t want to give them any time on the ball, we closed them down, we harried them from all over the pitch and at times played some good stuff ourselves.”
He continued: “We were 4-1 up and when the four minutes (of stoppage-time) went up the groan around the ground showed you that we’re still not safe, so it was nice for us to get a fifth goal, it was a terrific goal.
“It’s a great tonic for everybody – players, manager, staff, owner, supporters, even the guys who ask the questions every week, it’s a nice feeling.
“But we’ve had a few false dawns before this season and we know we’ve got a really tough game on Saturday (away at rock-bottom Coventry) but at least we can look forward to that game with a bit more confidence.”
Jewell had praise for midfield duo Andy Drury and Luke Hyam, while he said striker Michael Chopra’s inclusion – the striker making his first start in six games – was a last minute choice.
“It was a late decision,” said Jewell. “Sometimes as a manager you get a gut feeling, sometimes you get it wrong.
“Chops has been sharp in training for the last couple of days and I made the late decision today to play him. Jason (Scotland) was a bit unlucky, but it was a terrific first goal.”

Floridaboy, I tend to find that the people who brag the loudest about allegedly following Town home and away are usually the ones who spend an inordinate amount of their lives fighting keyboard warrior battles with imaginary etheral enemies from the safety of their bedrooms........

Having read all the previous comments, mostly of praise from star struck supporters and whilst saying "Well done" let's not forget that after beating Barnsley 5-3 with a brilliant second half display the boys then went on a losing streak so don't let bottom club Coventry allow you to be dragged down to their level... Want a bet they come unstuck ?

Fail to see the point of lambasting serial moaners; everybody is entitled to their opinion including John Burls and Frank Weston. Great result, fantastic for all concerned. It's the inconsistency of Our Kid thought processes which bother me though. Take Drury as a classic example. Played well again last night and should now be a regular in the starting line up. However it was only a few weeks ago that Our Kid would have flogged him to Crawley had the price been right. Same applies to Hyam and Martin to a lesser degree. OK let's all enjoy last night, if only to read Karen Brady's take on it in this weekend’s paper. However do not lose sight of what has gone on over these past 12 months. We can all get excited if we get a run going, starting on Saturday vs. Coventry. I'll be there, will you? No thought not.

I told you so I told you so, sorry, can't help crowing, but for a couple of weeks have been saying we don't need to bring anyone in, the team we had playing last night more than made the point for me. I was over the moon at the skill and desire and attitude shown. Our central youthful midfield was a revelation and certainly showed up the time servers we don't need anymore. Keep up the good work! As for JET, he's won me over, at last fulfilling his promise. I'm glad the referee didn't send off but yellow carded instead, it was important we beat a full and not a depleted team. Woke up feeling really happy this morning, why is a game of football so important?!! Oh and congrats to PJ and his coaches, I eat humble pie about my comments in the past.

A very good result. Hunger, passion and some luck which we have been missing all of for a while. I will not get carried away but a nice 3 points and a great help to the Goal Dif. Anything positive from the usual crowd on here or will they concentrate on the negatives on the 'non signing stories', bet I know where their comments appear 1st. Now lets take this into the Cov game and try and get a bit of momentum. I little run of picking up decent points over the next 5 games can soon lift us to the mix of mid table, which whether you like it or not is where we belong at present

Taking the result in perspective, it was clearly a very good performance. The question which is key is whether they can repeat it again on enough occasions to save relegation. After the 5-3 win at Barnsley, they fell away again. Why can't these players work hard and produce that type of display when they are not playing the league leaders in front of a big crowd. Come on Town, let's use this as a springboard.

Actually NOT getting in a bunch of strangers and shoehorning them straight into the team was the key. Buit doubtless Jewell will now put that 'right' by getting in a bunch of duds in on loan. If only managers would manage....particularly this one.

A very good, if frankly surprising, win. It would be churlish to not appreciate and celebrate it. With Forest being so abject, Doncaster and Watford selling their only good players and Coventry in a race for bottom place, I think we are hugely unlikely to be relegated (however bad we might play here on in). One win doesn't make a good manager though, nor does a few games of trusting some younger players. Not sure Jewell will ever win me back to rate him, but a v. good win all the same.

Yes you are right Liz. I think Ged and Rob will have gone back to Norwich to recover because they will struggle to explain this result.

One swallow does not a summer make.......but blimey it makes me look forward with a great deal of enthusiasm! If this team selection really represents a change in Jewell's philosophy in favour of youth, speed and work-rate then bring it on! Well done players and manager - now let's build on it. COYB!

So true Liz, even Tweedledum & Tweedledee (Rob & Ged) will be hard pressed to carp about this great result against the Hammers. They will either be conspicuous by their absence (waiting till we lose again & they can start chirping again) or change the subject & bang on about PJ's antics in the transfer market.

The good news: Drury and Hyam continue to be our best players; after two and a half seasons, Martin finally looks good; the defence survived 90 minutes without throwing the ball into their own net; Chopra’s back. The bad: Drury and Hyam have been ignored all season; we still have the same defenders that have performed like clowns all season; there’s little or no chance of Carson signing his new deal after being left out again; if the season so far is anything to go by, Chops is about to go missing again. Has Hyam signed his new contact, by the way? Why only a one year offer?

Yes those who say support the team whatever will now have a go at us that critisised. What they ignore is that it was precisely that critisism that led to younger players being given a chance - & how much better they were than Jewells prferred option of Dads Army !!!!!!! However if he has really been converted then well done - now all we need is committment to a grade one acadamy
