The centre-back has become Paul Jewell’s top target this month with Town submitting a reported four bids for the defender, as well as showing strong interest in team mates Joel Ward and Stephen Henderson.

But the Blues’ attempts to snap up the 24-year-old before tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline have been hit by cash-strapped Pompey’s resistance to sell.

The South Coast club have also rejected two other bids for Pearce from Championship clubs with the player himself saying at the weekend he didn’t want to move.

Ipswich must now decide whether to up their bid in the final hours of the window with chief executive Simon Clegg working through the night to get the protracted negotiations completed.

Having looked a dead deal this morning, we understand the club are still looking to bring in one, two or maybe all three players from their divisional rivals.

But they might have to pay over the odds to get their main man – something most fans would support if it meant Pearce’s signature.

  • So no Jason Pearce, no back up plan eg Sean St Leger, and the same excuses trotted out again that was said when we missed out on Billy Sharpe at the start of the season. Not good enough Ipswich. Clearly now Jewells hands are tied by Marcus Evans and Clegg as to how much money they will allow him to spend on players. It wont change this summer either. Keith Andrews was there for the taking, but no , just borrow , borrow, and borrow players until they have to go back. Spend good money on wages for these players, then wave them goodbye in January. Pathetic Ipswich, and you know it.

  • Even if Jewell had a clue what player to look for - and even if Clegg had any idea about negotiating a deal - just tell me of one (JUST ONE) good reason why any player would want to sign for Ipswich. I honestly cannot think of anything. That is the depth to which we have sunk. Paul Jewell can add another broken club to his CV.

  • Well if its up to clegg to do the negotiating town fans may as well hope for a blue moon. Its a case of the blind leading the blind, leading the blind with the 3 clowns running the regime at portman road.

  • what i would like to know is where has the conor whickam money gone we was supose to have for the next few transfer windows because if it is only £50,000 i would have rather kept whickam for another season. If these 3 players are that good pay what portsmouth want put on long contracts and if they keep us up what price that because at the moment we are only going one way.I dare say in the morning we will get fed some load of rubbish why we could not comlete the deals from clegg and co then more old duffers in on loan.

  • When was the last time 10 goals were scored at Portman Road. Yonks ago against somebody like Fiorentina or similar, i know i was in short trousers anyway. Could be a repeat tonight. You couldn't make this stuff up could you, it justs get worse by the minute. Got to feel a bit for Our Kid, bet he didn't bank on working with Morons. Still as they say. You Marry for money, you spend the rest of your life paying it back.

  • If Clegg and Jewell had started their work earlier, knowing what a predicament we're in, poor old Cleggie would not have had to work through the night. However, I expect that Jewell will be outside the dugout tonight working hard to sign someone with his mobile glued to his ear leaving poor old Cleggie taking all the flak when nothing happens. Good thing that the Olympic Connection exists Whoops !!! I didn't mean to say that and will run foul of the site moderator again.
