Chief executive Simon Clegg confirmed this today when he said: “We are operating for today, but planning for tomorrow.

“We have already started to think about life in the top flight.

“We are preparing for life back in the Premier League.

“The platform is being formed, as we don’t want to be in a position that Blackpool found themselves with barely three months to prepare for the move to join the big boys in English football.

“By planning for the future it allows us to run the business without getting into any financial difficulties.

“My message to our supporters is that we are incredibly excited about what the future will bring and optimistic to the same levels we were when I came to the club 14 months ago.

“There is so much that we can do with this club.”

Promotion from the Championship would solve Town’s financial insecurities at a stroke with just one year in the top flight guaranteeing them a cool £80million or so.

“But at the moment we have to watch the pennies,” added Clegg.

“With conference and banqueting hospitality down across the country as a whole I have to be prudent.

“I have to spend wisely and to invest with caution. And I will do that.

“But I hasten to say that it is not a worrying situation at all. It’s just being sensible and pragmatic.”

  • If "Major" Clegg doesn't back RK's judgement on new players we will all still be optomistic in another 14 months time. However, if we were to gain promotion with its £80M windfall, I suspect we wouldn't see Evans "backside for the dust"

  • How lucky you are to have me here. It just so happens that I 'Ged Steroo' have an encyclopaedic knowledge, not only of the innermost thoughts and motivations of Roy Keane, Marcus Evans and Simon Clegg, but also I am expert in corporate finance. I won't bore you with the details suffice to say, I have unfettered access to the legally privileged legal advice taken by Mister Evans, have expertise in corporate finance, debt restructuring and off shore currency arbitrage. Everything I say is true, relevant and the only opinion that counts...and don't you forget it! Come on you Blues - Well done for a great performance on saturday...

  • Ged Scott (don't worry I will use capital letters for your name even if you are not educated enough to do so). I fail to see how our 1st 4 games were against nobodies???????????

  • I would have thought money spent on another midfielder would have been better suited to us actually getting to the premier league. Yes we have a good midfield at the moment which functions really well as a unit . But what if injuries take one or two of them out? ...... Perhaps we can fall back on a hasty loan signing , but it seems a strange way to mount a promotion bid

  • I despise Cleggs approach and inability to sign players, but he does have a certain business acumen that will keep the coffers balanced and the club above water! I do sometimes wish we had someone a little reckless like Cardiff City - (at least for just 48 hours?!?! ha ha!) Although their spending will ruin them if not promoted, not a risk I would liek to see us taking... They must have heart attacks when Bellamy gets tackled!!! Ged your still a plumb!

  • Lovely little piece, so many cleggisms I wouldn't know where to start. Bit worried about poor Evans though with conference and banqueting facilities down across the country. Still with Clegg looking after the pennies the 440 million pounds will surely look after themselves. Incidentally what are these "financial insecurities"? They seem to have crept up on us rather suddenly. Didn't know with the 440million behind us we have often been told about that we'd have any. Or has someone been spinning little porkies then?

  • I am an ignorant, negative, feckless, imbecile who writes the same pointless, witless and thoughtless comments about every story posted about ITFC. As you will all have noted by my numerous posts on this site, I delight in demonstrating my lack of understanding, but have no real idea how to express myself in a manner that is interesting or entertaining. I will of course continue to post and bore you all, as to my mind, I am a brilliant satirist and my opinion requires continuous repetition.

  • It would be very interesting to hear how promotion could solve Town's financial problems - as it was promotion that caused them... and IF Town do manage to go up they have to start paying back the invisible man his ludicrously inflated loan which minimises the already faint chances of staying up more than a year or two.

  • Oh dear Clegg, shame you dont take a leaf out of Roy Superman Keanes modesty, calmness and total gentlemanly behaviour. No way would superman, say such outrageous comments after only 4 games against nobodies.
