Freddie Sears says he is sure Town’s disappointing start to the season will turn.

The popular striker came on at half-time against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night to rapturous applause from the Portman Road crowd

Still a huge fans’ favourite he livened up the Town attack, although the damage had been done in the first half as Ipswich lost 2-0.

They now sit second bottom in the Championship.

“It’s not easy losing games, drawing games. We want that winning feeling,” he said. “You come in and everyone’s disappointed. The gaffer said we were positive second half (against Boro), but we have to do it for 90 minutes.

“I’m sure it will turn. We didn’t play badly against Middlesbrough, just two sloppy goals against a good team with a lot of quality.”

Sears has started just two games this season, one of them the League Cup defeat at Exeter.

A niggling groin injury has hampered him in recent weeks, but he came off the bench at Birmingham on Saturday, as well as on Tuesday night.

With Town thin in the striking stakes at the moment, the Hornchurch flyer will have hoped he has done enough to warrant a starting place at Swansea on Saturday, where Town play their next Championship clash before the international break.

“I thought I came on and did ok at the weekend and now more minutes against Middlesbrough,” he said. “I’ve just got to keep pushing hard and keep working hard, give the manager something to think about.

“There’s an opportunity for me at the moment with Jon (Walters) and Ellis (Harrison) both injured. It’s just me and Kayden Jackson at the moment.”

Playing as a striker for 45 minutes on Tuesday, Sears created chances for himself, as well as worked the channels.

The fans were certainly delighted to see him off the bench.

“The fans have been brilliant with me from the day I walked through the door,” Sears added. “I love it here. It’s just disappointing at the moment we can’t give the fans that much more.”

Paul Hurst is still looking for his first win as Town boss as the Blues head to Swansea before that two-week international break.

Speaking in the Town programme on Tuesday night about his attacking options, he said: “With Jon and Ellis out it’s a situation we will have to look at and if there is anyone available that we feel can add to the squad, we will look at it.

“If we do bring someone in, it will be because we believe they can add something different to the squad, not just for the sake of bringing someone in.”
