THE Ipswich dressing room is united in their New Year’s wish – get DJ Campbell to sign a permanent deal at Portman Road.

The Blues top scorer, surely the best loan signing in the club’s proud history after 10 goals in 16 matches, will today play his last game of a fruitful three-month spell.

Campbell will return to parent club QPR this week with a permanent move to Town on the table – but his future at the Premier League basement club unresolved.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp has already said he would have loved to have had Campbell in his confidence-hit squad while a host of Premier League and Championship clubs will have watched the forward’s form with interest.

In Town’s favour will be the fact Campbell has rejuvenated his career in Suffolk while fans and team-mates alike are desperate for the 31-year-old to sign for good.

Strike partner Daryl Murphy insisted: “We definitely want him to stay. You want to keep your best players and at the minute, he is the one getting the goals.

“He might have a quiet spell in the game, but you know he is going to get a chance and score. That is what he does.

“It is working well, we have scored a few goals between us. He is a very good player to play with. He is always on the end of things, he is alive and a predator in the box.”

Left-back Aaron Cresswell added: “We all want him to stay – why wouldn’t you? You want to keep your top scorer, he has scored 10 goals and has been amazing.

“It is entirely down to him and his family, but me and the lads would like him to stay.”

Campbell’s incredible loan spell has seen an impressive 10 goals netted – and could have been even more prolific had he not missed two penalties.

But Murphy revealed that his fellow frontman won’t be getting another chance from 12 yards.

He explained: “I had a word with him the other day and said ‘that’s it now, you’ve had your chance’. I’m on them now. I have a 100% record so far at Sunderland and Celtic.”
