Paul Jewell delighted as Ipswich Town grab late winner at Coventry City

HAVING seen his side lose many a game at the death this season, Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell was delighted to see his side grab a last-gasp winner of their own at Coventry today.

Michael Chopra headed home deep into stoppage-time to seal a 3-2 win for the Blues in a topsy-turvy game played under constantly falling snow.

Town had led through Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’ strike, but found themselves 2-1 down at the break thanks a Sammy Clingan penalty and Gary Deegan finish – both soft goals to concede.

Chopra equalised after Lee Martin’s penalty was saved though and he then joined Emmanuel-Thomas in making it three goals in two games to claim all three points moments before the final whistle.

“It’s happened to us on numerous occasions this season, so to get a late winner ourselves is nice,” said Jewell.

“First half I think we started well; we were in control, scored the goal, but then we concede two soft ones before half-time.

“I was really annoyed with the way we gave the goals away. I said I was going to change it around 15 minutes after the restart, but we came out on the front foot so I decided to keep it the same.

“It was a bit herum scarem at the back at times, but at least we showed that we were on the front foot and wanted to win the match.

“Once it got to 2-2 it was end-to-end and you could see no team was settling for the draw. I think we’ve been part of a pretty decent game on a cold day.”

With West Ham thrashed 5-1 on Tuesday, Ipswich have now beaten the Championship’s top and bottom clubs in the space of a week.

It is only the third time this season back-to-back victories have been achieved. The Suffolk side are now 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

Jewell was unusually animated at the final whistle – punching the air – while his players embraced on the pitch.

“We were just trying to keep warm!” joked the Blues boss.

“You try and keep your emotions in check because you’re aware of the opposition, but it means an awful lot to us a group having been victims of last minute goals a lot.

“Having just beaten top-of-the-league you’re a little worried how you’ll respond against bottom-of-the-league, but we’ve managed two good results.

“This is a vital time in the season, obviously we are down the wrong end of the table so to get six points in a week is a big boost.”

  • Mellow_Yellow, you weren't so vocal last week when I commented to you that Sunderland were not very good against your mob. One more thing , how did you manage to escape from your village again ?

  • After scraping two successive wins against poor opposition some may feel the need for a long overdue celebration. However, PJ will no-doubt soon influence matters and bring it all crashing to earth quite soon.

  • Rob Steroo is clearly just an attention seeking Norwich fan who lives vicariously through this board. He loves to see the Town fail. Just ignore him.

  • Brisie58: Do you have mental health issues? Can anyone that’s interested click on the “Jewell wants future signing to settle in Suffolk” story and judge whether my light-hearted quip about Cressie having to save for a deposit constituted “having a go” at Chops or was merely a light-heated quip. I suspect those who have functioning brain cells and aren’t latent stalkers will choose the latter.

  • Credit where credit is due. I did n't see the game but it would appear the effort was put in to the end and a result gained. This is the type of performance required every week against every team and as has been said before is what supporters appreciate. Well done the players and particularly well done to the supporters that made the trip. Let us enjoy but don't let it obscure all the issues within the management of the club.

  • This was another great win and I whole heartedly congratulate the team and manager. Notwithstanding all of that I still want Jewell & Clegg out of ITFC for the reasons which have been masked by the last two performances. Keep it up lads and well done !!!

  • Poor Old Steroo, you're relentless criticism is starting to sound increasingly desperate. You're always going on and on about Jewell signing 'past-it' players and about loan signings. Why is it that you always conveniently overlook the good younger signings that he's made, such as Cresswell, JET and Drury?

  • I'm really enjoying being a Town fan this week. Young players showing a lot of hunger and no little technical ability pushing their way into the squad and getting results. JET could turn out to be an inspired purchase if maintains this sort of form too. COYB!!!

  • Hyam and drury are at the heart of this turn around in fortunes , we still have others waiting in the wings to take their chance , i hope jewell does not shirk from giving them a start in the first team , particularly if safety is achieved by the end of march

  • So all defeats are PJ's fault but he can take no credit for the victories. if nothing else he should take some credit for admitting and correcting his mistakes, which we all make, and keeping the team spirit up with all the negativity. Rob you are a clown, sir. Great win for town in difficult conditions. I have just got home (11.55) in time to see us on BBC.

  • Can Jewell resist bringing in a job lot of duds on loan? Can he resist awful substitutions? Previous form says no... but it would be nice to be proved wrong. He surely must be enjoying taking credit for rare victories that so tranparently have nothing whatosoever to do with him.

  • And a win against Middlesbrough will make it nine points out of nine. Hope the snow goes away. PJ is I think getting a feel for the way Ipswich should play, and Chopra,Jet et al are coming good just at the right time. It's a good all round team now and Edwards is surely a good enough footballer to be learning what being a defender entails even if it is not his position. In the end it's all about confidence and the team must be taking on board plenty of that now. Keep it up.

  • Great result and now 10 points clear of the drop. At long last I am getting cautiously optimistic about the rest of the season. With a bit of luck we can climb back to a mid-table finish. Like so many Town fans its great to see us banging in the goals (4th highest in the division) even if our defence is porous to say the least. Its also good to see the young guys doing well and JET & Chops having a really good week.
