Former Ipswich and Bury Town goalkeeper Nick Pope is closing in on an £18million move to Liverpool, according to reports.

The 26-year-old is currently at the World Cup with England after a stunning breakthrough season with Burnley, in which he won player-of-the-year honours after making his Premier League debut in September.

Liverpool are looking for a goalkeeper to replace Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet and are now said to be conducting background checks into Pope’s character as they prepare to make a move. National reports say Pope is valued at £18m.

The £18m at which Pope has been rated sees Pope as a significantly cheaper alternative to Jurgen Klopp’s other rumoured transfer targets, with Roma stopper Alisson rated at £70m and Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland valued at £30m.

A move to Anfield would be yet another high during a stunning season for Pope, who was working as a milkman and playing Ryman League football for Bury as recently as 2011.
