PAUL Jewell was dealt a sucker punch by former Manchester United keeper Tomasz Kuszczak’s decision to join divisional rivals Brighton on Tuesday night.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Now the Blues boss, who had identified the 30-year-old as his top goalkeeping target, must quickly look again at solving arguably his biggest problem for the forthcoming season. The likely alternatives include:

Brad Guzan

Age: 27

Teams: Chivas (USA), Aston Villa, Hull (loan)

Starts: 46

Likelihood: 7/10

Widely regarded as next on Jewell’s list after Kuszczak, though the identity of any Town targets continues – quite rightly – to be a closely-guarded secret. The US keeper, said to have been targeted for a loan deal by Jewell last season, quit Aston Villa in May to try and pursue first team football elsewhere after playing second-fiddle to Brad Friedel and then Shay Given. But reports emanating from Hull suggest Jewell might again have company as he looks to nail down a new number one.

Scott Loach

Age: 24

Teams: Watford, Bradford (loan)

Starts: 196

Likelihood: 6/10

The man many Town fans want to see sign. Helped by the fact that he is one the most experienced among potential targets and the not-too-small-matter of being an actual Ipswich fan. Throw in England Under-21 caps and that he is said to be unhappy with his situation at Vicarage Road after playing second-fiddle to, ironically, Kuszczak, and Loach becomes a highly attractive proposition. Doubts remain, however, about his ability after being benched at Watford.

Colin Doyle

Age: 26

Teams: Birmingham, Nottingham Forest (loan), Millwall (loan), Coventry (loan)

Starts: 62

Likelihood: 3/10

Doyle has been linked with Ipswich for the last few months although I understand it remains merely speculation at this stage. Birmingham’s goalkeeping situation is a little cloudy at present with Ben Foster in talks with West Brom and highly-rated Jack Butland linked elsewhere after his sudden call-up to England’s Euro 2012 squad. Doyle might be tempted to sit tight until the situation clears up, but he won’t want to warm the bench too much longer after little over 60 starts.

Paddy Kenny

Age: 34

Teams: Bury, Sheffield United, QPR

Starts: 551

Likelihood: 4/10

The vastly-experienced Kenny was sounded out by Jewell as a potential new keeper next season before looking even-money to join former boss Neil Warnock’s revolution at Leeds United. That still seems his most likely destination, but don’t rule out Jewell making a last-ditch bid to usurp that deal. Wherever he ends up, expect him to have a good season back in the second tier of English football.

Tom Heaton

Age: 26

Teams: Manchester United, Swindon (loan), QPR (loan), Cardiff

Starts: 112

Likelihood: 5/10

Like with Guzan, Heaton opted to walk away from his club in search of regular first-team football. The former Manchester United trainee excelled for Cardiff on the road to Wembley and the Carling Cup final but the 26-year-old could not push past David Marshall and cut a frustrated figure at the Bluebirds. In his place, Malky Mackay has, ironically, gone for former Peterborough keeper Joe Lewis, another Jewell considered for Ipswich.

Paulo Gazzaniga

Age: 20

Teams: Valenica (trainee), Gillingham

Starts: 19

Likelihood: 4/10

Something of an unknown quantity for many Town fans but the Valencia trainee is one of the more highly-rated custodians in the lower leagues. Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler has admitted his keeper has been watched by a number of scouts, but it would be a risk for Jewell to plump for an inexperienced 20-year-old as his number one. I would still expect the Town boss to go for another keeper even if he looked to sign ‘Gazza’.

The loan option

Likelihood: 6/10

Town fans might sneer at the prospect of another loan keeper becoming number one after the various failings of the David Stockdale and Alex McCarthy deals. But the longer it goes on, and the shorter Jewell’s list becomes, the Town boss might see this as a viable option. You would hope he would insist on no 24-hour recall clause after last season’s Stockdale debacle, but he could look to grab a Premier League reserve keeper of some repute. Manchester United’s Ben Amos has been linked while Stockdale himself told the EADT this month that he would be open to a return if he failed to become Fulham number one.

  • Old Timer, you really must excuse Cyril for he believes he is still in the 20th century and he sees no reason to post un-favourable comments about ITFC since he watches NO matches that most real supporters, moaners, whingers do.

  • Brian...out of work managers wise, I would go for Lee Clark. In work, Karl Robinson. The temptation I have for Di Canio, is somewhat tempered by the fact that like Keane, he is not a yes man, and therefore for the same reasons it would not work.

  • Cyril - I don't think I have made 'constant critisisms' of ITFC. I really do not believe Paul Jewell is the man to take us forward - but that is an entirely different matter. My main reason for this is his treatment of young players - which I believe goes against the best traditions of ITFC. I will always support Ipswich but that does not mean I have to always agree with thier management !!!!! This forum is for discussion & most people respect others points of view - the fact that you do not & seem to have to accompany any comment with a critisism of other contributers is what 'gets under my skin'

  • TrueBlue, you have raised an interesting question about which manager would I like to see at Portman Road. Firstly, I would not like to see someone who has been out of 'day to day' football for more than 12 months so that would have ruled out PJ for a start and IMO will handicap Keane in the future. Obviously there are experienced but unemployed managers available yet one wonders why they are unemployed. I would go for managers that are currently employed and who are well respected, knowledgeable, articulate and who have passion. People like Ian Holloway(Blackpool), Paolo Di Canio (Swindon), Michael Appleton (Portsmouth) I nearly included Nigel Pearson (Leicester)but he has already been rejected by ME. However on top of a fresh manager I would like to see a football man in place of CEO CLegg and would suggest a return of Derek Bowden with Mick Mills as a possible club chief scout and negotiator. But these wishes are also just speculation and we will have to tolerate PJ, at least until his contract runs out which will be too late for a replacement to rescue season 2012 - 2013.

  • Brian- What you say is correct I am speculating that this is just speculation- My point is why are we getting so hung up on missing alleged targets when we do not know that they are (were) in fact tagets. Now I will agree PJ is somewhat shackled by Clegg and his ineptitude- But I wont blame PJ for that. But am I really the only one who saw huge improvment in our playes last season? Does no one else agree martin, smith, delaney (who i still maintain was the worst defender town had ever had until PJ arrived), edwards and yes even Jason Scotland look far better players under PJ than they ever did under Keane? I think Town will improve next season. Im not sayinh we will go up, or even that we will make the play offs but I do think we will be closer and if that trend contiues I think PJ will get us there. Out of interest who would you rather see in charge?- Ralistic targets please I want Mourinhio but it wont happen

  • The fact remains that whilst other clubs are capable of signing players, we are now past the halfway point between our last competitive game, and the next one, and we have one GK< who the manager doesn't rate, and one centre-half, not to mention insufficient numbers to fill a 25 player first team squad. The one (promising) player we have signed, is unfit until October. The EADT is perfectly entitled to speculate, as along as the speculation is just that, as per this article. It is also entitled to quote the manager (using quote marks) as it does, although some of the less bright posters get confused between the two types of articles. As we stand, we are in an ever worsening mess, and until Clegg is sacked, taking Jewell with him, I see little changing.

  • TrueBlue, you are doing what you say EADT is doing, you are just speculating that EADT reports are just speculation. In the end what does it matter ? Jewell will end up signing only what Clegg says he can afford, either loanees or those remaining available after the useful ones have been snapped up. R.I.P. ITFC !!!!

  • TrueBlue - if you read all posts you will have noticed that I had recently been as critical of EADT articles as Cyril - this is NOT what I'm responding to. Rather what I object to is that Cyril seems incapable of making a point without at the same time insulting those who may disagree with him. I object to being referred to as gullible enough to 'believe all I read' & as such think I therefore have a right to point out that the person insulting me has not even managed to construct the sentance properly - which I would hope proves he might not be as infallible as he would have us believe.

  • Cyril- Spot on So many over reactions on here to what are in truth just stories and speculations- For those who have jumped down Cyrils throat what is says is quite correct ITFC are constantky linked with players that we have no interst in. Joh Burls the list of 'tagts' above is pure SPECULATION- Papers will do this, its part of their job. Whilst I think TK would have been a good signing I have seen nothing to suggest at this stage we were ever in for him. Same goes for the above. Look at the championship and the league as a whole there really havnt been that many delas done yet. Old timer instead of having a go at Cyrils grammer (its a forum for gods sake not white paper) why dont you respond to the point he raises- Namely you slate the club when reacting to stories on here that in all probability are just speculation. I hear ITFC are in for Michael Owen- So now you all have something to complain about when he signs for stoke- That should keep you happy for a while

  • Cyril, you are correct, and even you can be right sometimes, that Jewell may not have mentioned the targets being published but there again I couldn't understand what man says anyway as no way is he a speech therapist !!!!!! One thing puzzles me Cyril, if as you say we shouldn't believe what we read in EADT, why do you keep reading it and persist in jibes against those whose opinions differ from yours BUT who do attend matches at PR.

  • Sadly I have to repeat myself again. There has got to be serious problems at the top of ITFC. We simply cannot seem to sign anyone of any note. I as a follower of Town for 50 + years am getting to the stage of giving up on them totally. Never in the history of ITFC have they had so many problems in signing players. What seems to be staring everyone in the face is that although we seem to be sticking ridgidly with the new policies imposed regarding living within the clubs means, either we are taking this to the limit or other clubs are not abiding by these rules . Or alternatively everyone is right with the fact the CEO isn't up to it. Why, as an owner, if it is true that he wants to obtain Premiership status isn't Marcus Evans asking serious questions as to why we cannot sign decent players?

  • Brian, you really should not keep believing in what you read in the eadt. The only target PJ has mentioned is Hewitt and he is now a itfc player. The eadt todate have mentioned over 15 targets but that is just paper talk. PJ does not mention any until they are signed.

  • Thanks for the namecheck, Cyril. As it happens, don't misrepresent me. I don't believe everything I read, I just don't type every last thought that comes into my head like you appear to. I have no problems with speculation like this, they seem to HAVE to write something, I just don't think it carries much weight (for pretty much the same reason why I stopped reading The Sun, Star, Mail, etc some years ago). As far as your love for PJ goes, I think we both know where we stand. I have seen very little to believe he is in any way adept as a manager, you are willing to trust him regardless of his many admitted mistakes. Regardless, we will all know by the end of August who is right.... I hope you are (you may be surprised to read) so time is not wasted, but am pretty confident that he will be gone by the New Year. I hope we can stop the petty back biting when one of the other is proved right.
