PAUL Jewell is preparing an audacious raid on divisional rivals Peterborough in a bid to sign Paul Taylor and George Boyd before Friday’s transfer deadline.

Ipswich Town are readying a joint bid in the region of £1.5 million for the transfer-listed duo as Jewell looks to add to his attacking options.

Left-winger Boyd, 26, has long been one of the most consistent performers in the Championship while 24-year-old Taylor shot to prominence last season, top-scoring with 12 goals.

But the pair refused to sign new deals at London Road and were placed on the transfer list rather than being allowed to walk away for nothing next summer.

We understand Town owner Marcus Evans has personally got involved in negotiations with the Blues’ East Anglian rivals who know time is running out for them to make good money from any sale.

The interest in Boyd will not hinder any move for Daryl Murphy who is set to sign for a third loan spell at Ipswich in the next day or two.

But it does suggest that Jewell might view Murphy as a central striker, rather than the left-wing role he occupied for much of last season, alongside Michael Chopra, Jason Scotland and Taylor, if the pursuit is successful.

Jewell has until Friday’s summer transfer window deadline to make the signings but talks are said to be progressing well.

Leeds had also targeted Boyd but manager Neil Warnock has admitted his summer spending spree is all but over.

The midfielder, who can also play through the middle, has made 260 starts in his five-and-a-half years at London Road.

He has also started this season brightly scoring two goals in Peterborough’s first four league and cup matches.

Taylor, a Scouser like Jewell, had a great season last year – including being instrumental in Peterborough’s 7-1 win over Ipswich.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson took a chance on the striker who tested positive for cocaine while at Chester in 2008 but has now conceded his future lies elsewhere.

Jewell first voiced an interest in the duo way back in April when they were placed on the transfer list.

The Blues boss said: “I don’t know what their price would be but we would certainly be in the market for that type of player of that ilk and that desire and ability.”

  • Cyril, I know Boyd is a wide player, hence why I questioned why we would need Murphy (the striker aspect was in addition to Boyd. I know you are keen to contradict anything I seem to say, but please do try to read the WHOLE comment made :-) Strangely, we actually agree!

  • Quite frankly spartacus, I could not care less if it is a contradiction or not as long as it benefits the team. By the way Boyd plays wide left and Taylor is the striker. I cant see why we need Murphy if we are serious about these two.

  • Boyd yes- Good player and would add creativity and goals from midfield- Taylor I dont know about. I would have Murphy back too. I think he did well last season and if Boyd signed he would be the foil for chops up front adding physicality- Not prolific but I think he would gety plenty of assists. Plus if he does come back he will feel more of a town player than a celtic one! Then we need a cb desperately. Whether we need a RB too depends on how good Hewitt turns out to be once fit. I thnk Carlos has done well there but agree he is not a RB- Has improved though. To this day i question why Davud Wright was allowed to leave- O'dea was a poor replacemnet especially as a loan

  • Boyd would be a cracking signing, not sure he would see us as progressing an awful lot, other than the facilities. I know less about Taylor.

  • I agree - good players just not sure they're what we need. Given that Clegg is so tight with the money, these are surely two signings he should not sanction and makes me wonder if it's just desparation from Jewell to sign somebodyanybody? Liverpool have a tendancy to sign players for positions they don't need...

  • Boyd would be a very good addition and lord knows we need a striker that scores, but concerning that Taylor is only 5ft 7in.... not a good mix with the other relative tinies of Scotland (5ft8) and Chopra (5ft9). Hark, surely not another contradiction of good big 'uns are better than good lit'luns etc... Not sure why, if we got Boyd, we would need Murphy... in fact, even if we didn't get Boyd, still not sure how Murphy imporves things. Over rated based on performances last season- and hugely overpaid by Celtic.
