DARYL Murphy is close to agreeing a loan move to Ipswich – for the third consecutive season.
According to reports coming out of the Irish media, the Celtic frontman could rejoin Town as early as today.
Blues boss Paul Jewell has never hid his admiration of Murphy but repeatedly claimed that the fact the Scottish champions wanted a fee for the 29-year-old and the striker’s wages meant a deal was unlikely.
Now it seems a compromise has been reached with the player told he is no longer part of Celtic boss Neil Lennon’s plans – despite featuring heavily in pre-season.
Murphy, who will become a free agent next summer, first signed for Roy Keane in February 2010 before coming back to Suffolk under Jewell last August, scoring four times in 33 Championship appearances.
Though his preference is to play as a central striker, Murphy would also give Ipswich options on the left-hand-side, where he largely played last season.
He has been out of action for two weeks with a hamstring injury, but could still feature in the Town squad for Saturday’s match at home to Huddersfield Town.
One person also likely to play is Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes in his first match back at Portman Road since being controversially sold by Roy Keane.
Terriers chairman Dean Hoyle today told the Huddersfield Examiner that he would not stand in the striker’s way if the club’s valuation of the hot-shot was met.
But Hoyle confirmed that no one had yet come close and it seems likely Rhodes will return to Suffolk on Saturday rather than be sold before Friday’s transfer window deadline.

What have we come to as a club?!! We can only give PJ another two months to find a cohesive team. I don't think I can continue supporting the club unless something happens soon to dispel the gloom. We have been tolerating the slow decline now for a good ten years! Nothing inspires the supporters for more than a couple of games before we take two steps back. I have been supporting the club for 52 years and there have been some miserable years but we have recovered within two years. This has been going on for far too long. Support is beginning to drain away. The first indication of a club in trouble is when decent players don't want to sign. We seem to have a team of misfits who are inconsistent. Its rubbish!! Where have the good days gone. The last ones were when Joe Royle was in charge and the club treated him badly so we lost him. I can't see myself buying a season ticket next year unless the club gets a grip. I feel quite disloyal saying these things but the likes of ME and Glegg don't do it for me.

Can't believe there are still people on this site who believe Paul Jewell is a good manager - based purely on the fact that - at least he didn't get rid of Jordan Rhodes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So a few years ago Roy Keane made a mistake - this shouldn't be enough to guarantee Jewell a 'job for life' Apart from anything else Jewells own treatment of young players so far has left a lot to be desired. Rhodes would have gone by now anyway - to the first team that offered him something better than youth team football & a derisory one year contract.

Kevin, just accept PJ is unlikely to get the sack, live with it. I trust you will be going to the next home match to see the player that your man Kean gave away. We would not be in a mess for a goal scorer if he had not been such an idiot.

Would be a backward step in every way, and would confirm that Jewell has learned nothing, and should be sacked.

@ Cyril. Do you EVER read what Jewell says? He has clearly stated that he is fully supported financially by Clegg and ME. Either you are calling him a liar or you have to assume he is telling the truth.

This would be the final straw if true... I sincerly hope it is just rumour. Not worth the high wages and would just take over Carson or JETs much needed place for experience.

Everyone else that Jewell has tried to sign, there has been interest from other clubs, hence we failed on each occasion. Interesting isn't it, that no other such clubs have been mentioned in connection with Murphy, looks as though we will get this target then.

If sufficient funds for transter targets and their excessive wage demands are not available from ME and Clegg what options does PJ have other than get in loanees? Get real people and blame the funding not the manager. If PJ needs extra bodies how else is he going to get them other than loans?

So lets have some constructive critisism, the owner will not spend to sign players, so are you all suggesting we carry on with a squad of 18, come on get real if you want to aim your frusdtration make sure its it in the right direction.

Why does PJ target the same players each season. Is is because he cannot identify any others who would be prepared to sign for him? Need to look at the lower leagues and take a punt for someone like Cresswell.

Oh no - here we go again - Jewell returning to his tried & tested - & failed policies. One lapse by the youngsters is seen as an excuse to return to what he truly believes in - older loanees & mercenaries. Murphy hardly set the world alight in 2 previous spells & his major asset seems to be there will be no competition for his signature as nobody else wants him. Furthermore he is always played out of his favourite position to the detriment particularly of Carson - based on Jewells tactical wizadry of him being significantly taller. The only plus point I could see here would be if he was played as the loan striker - a role to which Chopra is lamentably not suited - but this would mean dropping Jewwlls favourite so would suggest this is unlikely ?????? Yet another retrograde step from a manager who has been hopelessly out of his depth for the past 18 months.

Jewell, have you not yet learned that you need another central defender, striker and right back not more mid fielders?

Ha.. ha.. was this the winning joke from the Fringe Festival. Honestly, has PJ really run completely out of ideas. Interesting to see who gets the chop later for the debacle saturday when the biggest problem once again is where is the plan b.. 2-0 down against the run of play a little, 15 minutes of half time then it ends up 6-0, you really have to think he is out of ideas and this Murphy rumour only adds to my thoughts.

Oh dear. yet another loanee - three in total now. That's far too many and evidence that PJ has failed to land his main targets in the Summer - despite having had 4 MONTHS to sort it out. Now, without a Plan B, we are moving backwards with more loans. How is this building for the future? PJ OUT!
