BRYAN Klug has been tasked with transforming the future of youth football at Ipswich Town.

The former Blues assistant manager and academy director has agreed to make an emotional homecoming and will get straight to work next week.

And he will do so with the blessing of departing academy head Sammy Morgan who last month announced his decision to step down.

Morgan said: “I would be absolutely delighted if Bryan comes back. I have nothing but the greatest respect for him and I would wish him all the best.”

Ipswich have wasted little time in turning to Klug after Morgan announced his departure just 10 days ago. In truth, the club had no choice but to act swiftly with the new academy structures coming into play.

In March, Town opted for Category Two academy status, an added investment of £1 million a year but not the top-tier level advocated by more than 5,000 supporters through a petition.

But the money saved by not going for Category One might have helped entice Klug to a long-term deal at Portman Road – something that will go a long way to appeasing fans concerned about the current state of the club’s youth.

While the club and Klug are both remaining tight-lipped, we expect a formal announcement to be made within 48 hours with the 51-year-old – current head of player development at Tottenham – starting in his new job on Monday.

The news will be universally welcomed by supporters after Klug oversaw the development of home-grown talents Richard Wright, Kieron Dyer and James Scowcroft and guided the Blues to FA Youth Cup success in 2005.

Klug, who still lives in Suffolk, was assistant manager to Jim Magilton before being sacked by Roy Keane in 2010.

His appointment appears to be heralding a change of direction at Ipswich after Malcolm Moore, head of recruitment at the academy, announced his retirement.

Moore, who has been at the club for 20 years, said: “It’s a decision I have been thinking about for a while and it has not been an easy one.

“I leave though with so many good memories of my time at Ipswich Town – the young players I have worked with, the staff at the club and the terrific nights in the Youth Cup.”

  • Old timer, you worry about your entries, and I will worry about mine, but just take note that I have the guts to show my name, where is yours. and I stick to the truth unlike yourself and your explanation for the storry you told about someone who knew me. I just think if you have something to say you should not be afraid to put your name to it, how do you feel about that. I wont be responding on this subject again.

  • CYRIL - seems my previous post did not get through - really must try again as this is too good an opportunity to miss. The trouble is you're so aggressive to those who do not agree with you that it is difficult not to have a pop when we get the chance. Even when largely agreeing with Brian you still refer to him as a 'bleater' which seems unecessary & confrontational. Similarly when previously I stated there were 2 people on this site at one stage called Old Timer you said this was not possible & that I was therefore being 'economical with the truth'. You were quite categorical in your statements & put yourself forward as some sort of expert on technology. Now it seems that far from being the doyen of all knowledge as you claim - you have in fact been unable to grasp the concept that the previous century was a mere 12 years ago & have made yourself again look foolish in your reply.!!!!!!!!!! perhaps if you were to tone down your posts a little people would not feel the need to ridicule your many mistakes.

  • Steroo, your posts are becoming more strange. You talk about the last century, then you talk about this century. Is that an attempt to make a poor point look better? You can't have it both ways - one minute you and others are complaining that we have good young homegrown players (Hyam, Smith etc) who don't get picked enough. The next minute you are saying that we are running down youth development. To blame Ipswich for the fact that Dyer didn't capitalise on his talents is rather a significant leap in the chain of cauation - he was arguably at his peak when he left Ipswich and has suffered repeated injuries and other issues since then, entirely unrelated to the club. Whilst I don't always disagree with some of your comments, your continued negative approach in any given situation and inability to take a fair, logical and rational view and give credit where it is due, entirely undermines you.

  • Cyril - When talking of last century Steroo means prior to 2000 (i.e the 20th and 21st centuries respectively)...I actually think he makes some valid points

  • Yes Brian even you bleaters must be happy, but as for Steroos comment, I did not realise we had a youth team prior to the last century.

  • At last someone at the club is showing some initiative in going for BK as he is the ideal choice as Academy Head but also has some managerial experience under his belt. Don't know who is responsible for the swift action in replacing Sammy Morgan but well done and perhaps Jewell can speed up his signings.

  • All good and not very credible PR but the harsh reality is that Town's youth production line effectively stalled in the last century and it matters not one jot who heads the 'adademy' if there is no desire to fast-track youth development, nor even give home-grown talent the remotest chance to show what they can do. Unless things change this is just a glib PR exercise which even question's Klug's motives for returning to a place which so conspicously wasted his talents. The EADT could usefully investigate the mystrious running down of youth development in favour of short term loans which certainly started in Klug's (and Burley's) tenure. Why did Dyer and Wright fail to capitalise on their talents? Why do Town seem unable to develop and keep the likes of Richards & Trotter? Why did no players whatsoever establish themselves following that much-trumpeted 2005 FA youth cup win? All are integral faults that have contributed in full to Town's long-term decline this century - and will continue to do so.
