IPSWICH Town manager Paul Jewell continues to look to strengthen his squad ahead of next season – but who would you most like to see sign?

The Blues boss is aiming to add at least six new faces to his squad after releasing the likes of Ibrahima Sonko and Lee Bowyer, seeing Daryl Murphy’s loan from Celtic expire and Grant Leadbitter depart on a Bosman free transfer.

With a goalkeeper, two centre-backs, cover at full-back, a midfielder and striker all being targeted, here is what the EADT and Ipswich Star understands is the latest. But who would you most like to see sign out of the following?

– Alan Judge (Notts County)

A £500,000 bid has been made for the direct-running midfielder, nicknamed ‘the Irish Messi’ by Magpies fans. The 23-year-old is yet to sign the contract extension which is on the table.

– Paul Gallagher (Leicester)

The Blues have made tentative enquiries about the 27-year-old winger who, like Judge, is a set-piece specialist. It’s understood the one-time Scottish international is prepared for a new challenge, while the Foxes would listen to offers around £750,000.

– Joel Ward (Portsmouth)

The versatile 22-year-old is set to meet with Paul Jewell and owner Marcus Evans again this week after a fee of around £500,000 was agreed with Pompey’s administrators. It’s understood that he has narrowed down his options from six Championship clubs to Town and one other.

– Sam Baldock (West Ham)

It’s understood that managerial friends Paul Jewell and Sam Allardyce have discussed the possibility of the intelligent striker – a £2.75m buy from MK Dons in January – joining Town on a season-long loan following the Hammers’ promotion back to the Premier League.

– Michael Jacobs (Northampton Town)

The winger looks set to leave his League Two employers this summer. Out of contract, a tribunal would determine the transfer fee as he still only 20 years old. Ipswich are among a host of Championship clubs believed to be interested, with Derby County also heavily linked.

– Daryl Murphy (Celtic)

Jewell is keen to sign the Irish winger/striker following his season-long loan from Celtic. The Scottish club are understood to have quoted a £300,000 asking price.

– David Norris (Portsmouth)

Town chief executive Simon Clegg revealed that he has been in recent contact with the midfielder who departed the club on a Bosman free transfer last summer. Available on a cut-price deal, could be seen as a cheap replacement for Grant Leadbitter.

  • TBH may as well call back John Walk, he would do better than our current pile of garbage.

  • David, wholeheartedly agree that Town fans past and present should rally round for "The Beat" I hope this episode doesn't affect his local radio appearances. He was probably the best player ever to have put on a Town shirt and that's saying something when he's compared to Mick Mills, Paul Mariner, Muhren and Thyssen, David Johnson, Brian Talbot etc. etc. He would go through a brick wall for Ipswich and this was probably why he finished so young. If someone does wrong it's not always the right thing to do in turning your back on them and this is definitely the case with "The Beat"

  • Kevin, you are very quick to call Kevin Beaties actions as deplorable. What would you call the actions of somebody who discloses information they learn whilst in a position of trust.

  • The Kevin Beattie story is a sad one, as he has acted in a way I find deplorable, yet it is equally dreadful that the best ever Ipswich player (I would have Wark top myself) is in that position although only Kevin himself knows how much money he had and spent, as he was earning very good money at the time compared to the man in the street, although not compared to todays players, clearly. As I printed the payslips, I am in a position to know that. I actually think it also puts the club in an invidious position,as if they organise a benefit match in response to a criminal act, however sad, it is not exactly the right message, is it? A tough one, for sure.

  • A goalkeeper. Frank Fielding or Joe Lewis. Watch someone else snap them up while we dither.

  • We NEED a goalkeeper,a right back and 2 central defenders. Yet Jewell is about to make the same mistakes as usual.Jewell will be gone by the end of the season because he fails to bring in promising players in the right position. Gallagher and Norris are certainly players we don,t need. Its make or break this year as the fans are tired of watching a weak and disjointed team struggle. Jewell has limited time to now prove to the fans he is capable of building a team.

  • While i know wages could be a stumbling block (And they may not be willing to drop a division) i think Town are missing a trick not looking at some of the players released by premier league clubs. Brad Guzan (Released by Villa) - Goalkeeper, 27 years old (Plenty of life left in Keeper terms), Premier League experience. Gavin Hoyte (released by Arsenal) - Defender, 21 years old, Premier league experience.Sure to be plenty more released from clubs shortly.

  • as is often said during a general election i'd vote for 'none of the above' but to be fair to the EADT this is going to be a very long close-season, and they have to fill the pages with something

  • How about a tick box for 'none of the above' and a reality check on the positions Town actually need strengthening in... it is beginning to look (again) that the manager hasn't got the remotest clue.

  • I hear we are signing Lionel Messi, Christiano Ronaldo and the Manchester City goalkeeper and Centre back. Yeh o.k. another load of rubbish, but it would be nice to sign someone without all this will he won't he situation. I can't recall another team in any Division that always seems to have so much baggage attached to potential new signings. Let's for just once sign someone decent out of the blue without all the strings attached. PLEASE.

  • Couldn't agree more David. I am unsure whether Beattie received a benefit match when he retired, but as the player continuously voted as the best ITFC player ever, surely the club could hold another benefit match or similar. It may even help reconnect the Club with the fans and community again.

  • OK, for all those moaning about the defence and goalkeeper issues. You are spot on. I to, don't understand why there isn't a defender (except you could sort of count Ward) and no Keeper. However, to those who are moaning about Jewell going for attackers and midfielders. Are you telling me we have a good enough midfield and enough attackers, I think Judge and Gallagher.

  • Dear fans of Ipswich f.c. I would like to ask you if you saw the story regarding one of are own mr Kevin Beattie In the daily mail today about his on going problems..of course there are plenty of other people worse of then him. But i feel with the help of the E.a.d.t. and Ipswich Town surely some thing could be done in a small way to help this great player again in his hour of need. Remember he only came out of the game at 28. Because he was over played when in most case's he should have been rested. Don't let this Ipswich star down in this. Come on E.A.D.T. support him....

  • I've gone for Joel Ward because we clearly need a defender or 2 but in reality I'd choose Darren Ferguson. In reality though, it matters not what the fans want (whatever jibber Jewell come out with), if it did matter we wouldn't have been so poorly treated last season to ineptitude. As ever, we will know by the end of August whether Jewell will be gone by the end of December.... unfortunately (or not) I sense he will fail again and waste a further 3 months not getting the players we need from lower divisions and continuing his tradition of not being able to nurture youth players. Thats 100 days to go until we find out (this is the real countdown clock...)

  • You need to add, "None of these begin to adress the main areas of weakness in the team" to the list. Then most of us could vote for one of the options! Otherwise youmight as well just add "another turnstile painter".
