SUPPORTERS might have been split over the impact of Lee Bowyer as an Ipswich Town player this season.

But Blues boss Paul Jewell has sung the praises for the former Leeds United and West Ham midfielder after opting not to offer him another 12-month deal.

The manager confirmed: “We are not offering Lee Bowyer a contract.

“I spoke to him at length over the last couple of weeks. He is a terrific lad and a terrific pro. He has been great around the place, especially with the young lads.”

Jewell hinted that the sticking point might have been Bowyer’s desire to extend his playing career with the Town manager predicting a bright future for the midfielder on the training ground.

He added: “I think he has a good career ahead of him coaching as he has terrific knowledge and he is a real good guy and good role model for young players.

“Whatever he does, he wants to win. He wants to continue playing. I am sure there won’t be a shortage of takers for him.

“He goes with our best wishes, but we are going down a bit of a younger route.”

  • Kevin Bailey: I was not belittling Bowyer's more recent conduct but his conduct in his earlier days was poor, and he had several brushes with the law. That just happens to be a fact. The fact that he has grown up a lot is to be applauded. But the fact is that a player of his ability should have, for example, played many more times for England than he did, and it is a shame that one of the more talented midfielders of his generation did not quite live up to that potential.

  • rammstein rules - you should read some of the comments you deride - they are well thought out & articulate & are from genuine Ipswich fans who are frustrated are the way the club is going - if only your response was equally condidered. You will find it hard to identify any instances of the 'moaners' insulting the 'loyal' fans - whereas you always feel you have some right to do so. If you look at the various articles on this site you will note that the majority of the 'moans' are about the treatment of young players & how these have not been given the same consideration as the Dads Army that has failed so miserably. The traditions of Ipswich have been built on having a good acadamy & bringing youngsters through the ranks & it goes against the grain to see this thrown away. Your rallying cry to 'get behind the team' is flawed because in no other walk of life would you donate to a cause you no longer believed in. People will find other things to do on a Saturday rather than pay good money to watch the turgid fayre served up all too often at PR. What you fail to realise is that the club is there to serve the fans NOT the other way around. Not doing so will lead to gates continuing to fall - less money for players - & if you are going to compound this by abandoning a youth policy then it is a very slippery slope. If football fans all followed their team no matter what then this would be regarded as acceptance & none of them would strive to improve. I have followed the town for 50 years & only in the last few weeks have I decided to stop watching them. Your implication that not getting behind the team & following them whatever is some sort of traitorship could not be further from the truth. Rather it relates to the fact that I genuinely feel that during my years of support this is the low point. I watched my first game in Ramseys title winning year - so feel that my decision to stop this year is hardly hasty. You should read comments from fans & realise that the critisisms they make are genuine & support is not withdrawn lightly - then perhaps you - & even Mr Jewell - will realise there is a problem with the product being supplied that goes somewhat deeper than the customers being a 'miserable old farts'

  • The question here should be 'Was PJ right to sign him'? The answer is NO. Terrible management. Far too many of Jewell's signings have already left the club. Time for ME to bring in a new manager in order to build this Summer. As others point out, after the dust settles and PJ's has beens and loans have gone, we are left with a very small squad ... PJ failed last Summer and this season. He and Clegg should pay the ultimate price. Disappointed with Marcus Evans - very disappointed. PJ OUT!

  • What a prat Jewell is, he quotes above “He goes with our best wishes, but we are going down a bit of a younger route.” Did this man not know Bowyers age last year, like Bullards, Sonko, Ellington, Wright, Igmarsson. Utter clown and with his sideshow clegg joined at the hip it would not suprise me if the younger options turn out to be cubs and scouts.. Worse team in last 10 years shows what progress we have made!!

  • Town have had too many players recently who can deliver on the training ground but have not delivered on match days or have not been given the opportunity to deliver on match days. Will Paul Jewell be given the time & money to correct the errors he has been party too?

  • Just remember that Jewell has said there won;t be an overhaul this summer. We currently have 22 first team squad players at the club. Wright, Bowyer, Sonko and Kennedy are leaving (down to 18). Smith, Scotland and Leadbitter are looking at contracts (possibly 15 left). Of those 15 Jewell clearly doesn't rate ALB, Hyam, Carson, Ellington, Ainsley and Peters (Now 9 players left). Assuming PJ possibly putting more faith in Hyam and Carson next season, that still leaves us with 11 first team players, which means a desperate search for at least 6-7 players, which is a percentage overhaul for anyone living in reality. Says one thing, does another, and treats all of us Ipswich fans like utter idiots. I find this offensive and am continually stunned that some fans still feel he is fit to be our manager. I think it is unhealthy to keep changing managers and a strength to give managers time, but it is equally a strength to realise when a mistake has been made. Jewell is most certainly a mistake.

  • Tom, too early to write Bullard off. IF played in a creative middle of the park role, with Martin in front, and Hyam behind, that could be very productive for us. I agree that Ellington was an utter waste of money, and that Bowyer had to go, as Bullard is more creative, and Hyam is better defensively, thus rendering Lee as surplus to requirements. Tom Borooughs....Lee Bowyer did have issues when younger, which are documented, and widely known about. However, he is a responsible man now, and a good influence, and not deserving of the comments you make about him (in my view)

  • It may be true that LB has been a "good role model" in recent years but his early misadventures off the field while at Leeds (he was acquitted, however) suggest that he had some issues. An excellent player in his prime; I kind of feel that he should perhaps have achieved more than he did.

  • "Whatever he does, he wants to win". Shame he didn't show that in the numerous poor performances he put in, including where we needed that will to win and competitveness in the middle of the park when we got stuffed on a number of ocassions. Bowyer, along with Bullard and Chopra, have been the two major disappointments this season. Good to get rid of deadwood - just need Bullard, Ellington etc to go now and replace them with hungry, committed 25 year olds.
