YOUNG American keeper Cody Cropper has been told he will not be getting a new contract at Ipswich Town.

The 19-year-old has been on the first-team bench on three occasions this season – the Carling Cup defeat against Northampton and subsequent league matches at home to Reading and away to Crystal Palace.

But Paul Jewell has opted not to extend the youngster’s contract – beyond the 12-month professional terms he signed last year – making him a free agent this summer.

Cropper was tonight said to be ‘gutted’ by the decision. While writing on Twitter, the 6ft 3ins US Under-20s keeper said: “It’s honestly so depressing but at the same time its good to know that I can move on to bigger and better things.”

  • Never mind Cody, if you are any good you'll move on to better things like so many others released by ITFC. Good luck where ever that may be.

  • Message to Cody Cropper, see what progress Tom Eastman has made at Colchester United after rejecting Town's derisory offer !!!!! You can do better than playing under Jewell and his coaching team and best of luck mate !

  • Actually, Monkey1986, I think you will find that Cropper was injured for a large part of the season before you suggest he was never considered. As for Murray, again, who knows. He may not be good enough, but we will never see- Most people agree that Carson and Hyam are good enough and the fact Jewell doesn't clearly brings his judgement very much into question- and it isn't just about 'good enough now', it is about having the coaching ability to help them achieve their potential. I have no specific knowledge on the subject, but wonder if Jewell has ever coached many, if any, youths through to a first team. Anyone know?

  • Unbelievable. A few months ago I was left in shock as we got rid of some more very promising players, and now, again, goodbye a very promising keeper. The guy is rated highly by his own country, the U.S.A and the fact that he hasn't even been given a chance is shocking. Oh dear, oh dear.

  • Kevin - how do you know he's good enough? See him train day after day do you? Or seen him play games? The manager didnt even see fit to play him when we have had borderline goalkeeping chaos this season. So many people on here seem to make assumptions. Its the same with Ronan Murray. People complain he isnt played, blame the manager, not giving youth a chance, but then you speak to Swindon fans who have seen him and they all say he's nothing special. We cant assume young players at the club are good enough without seeing them prove it.

  • @Monkey1986- you may be right. Cropper might not be up to the job, but can you blame us for assuming Jewell doesn't have a clue about youth players (a staple ITFC diet as a neccessity) when he is clearly both unwilling and unable to play or judge them accordingly. Does anyone really think Bowyer was better than Hyam this season? Does anyone really think Murray wouldn't get 18 goals in 80 games like Scotland? Does anyone really feel that Jewell was right to give a loanee (Murphey) numerous games when Carson's progress would have benefitted inordinately with them? Does anyone really have something solidly positive to indicate what Jewell has done right to lay foundations for the future? Anyone that thinks we, as a club, aren't hugely reliant upon our youth set-up is pie-in-the-sky, cuckoo-land mad. Jewell has openly disregarded this fact and we are MUCH worse off for it.

  • Monkey.....he is good enough, and GK are unique, as they need to be tested in gametime situations more than any other position.

  • Another youngster discarded by Town. How sad. We seem to have lost so many and some are doing well with other clubs - Trotter, Rhodes, etc. Fielding the Derby keeper is becoming available, PJ. Would be a great asset to us.

  • Im not a fan of Paul Jewell but ive got to defend him here. We dont know how good this guy is, maybe he simply isnt good enough for a mid table championship side. People see his age and start complaining about letting !another young player leave" but just because your young doesnt mean you should have a contract at the hope that you improve one day.

  • Given that ME has now missed the opportunity to reorganise his management team - for at least another 9 months. Would it not be sensible for him to bring in a 'mentor' for PJ: Somebody who knows about identifying, motivating and coaching young players to their potential? Has Alex F a bit of spare time at the moment or perhaps Arsene W. I'm being serious, all the great managers watched and learnt from great managers. They didn't go on blindly making the same mistakes.

  • Another youngster 'dumped' by Jewell without being given an opportunity. Still it was predictable seeing that he is only 19yrs old, too young for Jewell's 'dads army' and probably not doing well in training. Never mind Cody, best of luck in your future and you will most certainly do better at another club away from a 'loser' like Jewell.

  • Well he's never played for the !st team, so most can't hav any idea if he's any good. But wha message does this send to younger players? Jewell had a golden opportunity to play Cropper and other youngsters in the last few games of this season so as usual we can only go by his judgement and never really know what the likes of Cropper might have been capable of.

  • I think its pathetic really. Its another one of our promising youngsters released for someone else to benefit from. I wonder which championship side he is going to sign for. It is so depressing for a season ticket holder of the past, present and future to see our young players being released on a constant basis and replaced by jewell's old crud cast off's.

  • And there goes another youth that didn't get a chance... *despairs*. I know some will have a misguided faith in Jewell's opinion ('Jewell has more experience than us' type retorts), but MY experience so far is that Jewell's opinion is flawed at pretty much most turns, and that JET and Cresswell were just random lucky hits. I hate what he is doing to my club :-(
