Carlisle v Ipswich: Old pals Paul Jewell and Greg Abbott will come head-to-head in opposing dugouts for the first time tonight.

The two managers, who remain good friends, will lock horns to do all they can to achieve cup success – using it as a platform for improvements in their respective leagues.

Win, lose or draw, Abbott has paid a handsome tribute to ‘Jagger’ Jewell – while offering, in his own unique style, some insights into the personality of the Blues boss.

He said: “Jagger is a typical Scouser – he’s always got something to say.

“In all seriousness, he was a good player. He was the poor man’s Kenny Dalglish – he twisted and turned and got his shots away, a bit like Cads (Carlisle striker Danny Cadamarteri).

“He always loved his football, was fantastic around the dressing room and he has since gone on and kept the same appetite for it.”

The pair played together at Bradford City with Abbott politely declining to talk about all the things they got up to – for fear his Carlisle players might end up doing the same thing.

He reflected: “Times have changed. There was no Facebook, textbook, twitterbug and all that sort of stuff. I don’t even know how to do all that, and if I don’t he [Jewell] certainly won’t.

“He said ‘We’ll both end up as managers, you know that don’t you?’ I actually said that I couldn’t see him as a manager.

“And he said, ‘Well, I’ve got more chance than you.’ And he made it before me, and he’s been successful.

“But win, lose or draw, Jagger will be in with me after the game and we will be shouting and bawling at each other, telling a few stories.”

  • Dalglish was the best footballer I have ever seen, and if you look at his managerial record, has also been a top drawr manager. Jewell was mediocre as a player, and sadly has proven to be less than mediocre at Derby and here. I would suggest that he is a poor man's John Duncan myself.

  • From a poor mans Kenny Dalglish to a poor mans Jonn Duncan - all in one fell swoop !!!!!! And that's before we even start on the Jagger references.

  • Based on Dalglish's last stint as a manager, Jewell is still an incredibly poor mans version. 3 days to the end of the transfer window and it appears we are either going to make a couple of desperate signings or we will resort to the loan dersperation that was predicted. I love the fact we are playing the youths but this is only because Jewell has been unable to persuade anyone to play for him, not through his choice (he has ALWAYS had teams of older players- youths, and how to nurture them, has never been his thing. Quite stunning that we ever appointed him with our history). To those that say this view is negative I laugh. Many of us noted Jewell's ineptitude within 3 months of his arrival. He hasn't changed, he never showerd his experience and he has wasted approaching 2 years of our football experience with his ineptitude. My only sorrow is that ME will probably still wait another few months to get rid of him....

  • Mmmmm - To even mention Paul Jewell in the same breath as Kenny Dalglish is laughable.....PJ was a less than average footballer and has now proved himself to be a less than average manager at three clubs
