ONE leading bookmaker has made Ipswich Town boss Paul Jewell the favourite to be the first Championship manager to leave his post.

Next Championship manager to leave their post (according to Stan James)

Paul Jewell – Ipswich Town 4/1

Eddie Howe – Burnley 6/1

Darren Ferguson – Peterborough 10/1

Nigel Pearson – Leicester City 10/1

Kenny Jackett – Millwall 12/1

Steve Kean – Blackburn 12/1

Keith Hill – Barnsley 12/1

Derek McInnes – Bristol City 12/1

Stan James believes Jewell is a 4/1 shot to be sacked or quit Portman Road when the new season kicks off next week.

It is, in one sense, understandable given the Blues’ dire run of seven straight defeats last season with only the remarkable turnaround at Barnsley in December preventing – perhaps – insurmountable pressure on Jewell’s head.

The Ipswich manager is entering the final year of his contract and will need to start the 2012/13 season well to ensure he earns a new deal.

But he continues to have the strong support of owner Marcus Evans and while the club’s investment in new players this summer has been small, with one eye on new Financial Fair Play rules, that overall backing is set to continue.

Burnley manager Eddie Howe, Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson and Nigel Pearson at Leicester are also said to be on shaky ground according to the bookmakers while the longest odds isfor Watford manager Gianfranco Zola at 25/1 to leave.

Elsewhere, with Paddy Power, Town are 25/1 to win the Championship and 15/2 to get promoted.

Michael Chopra, who has enjoyed a fine pre-season netting six goals, is 20/1 seventh favourite to be top of the goalscoring charts at the end of the campaign.

  • Rex, you are not thinking about what I have written. I repeat, millions of people enjoy a drink, and a bet without it being anything other than a pleasure. I also stated, that as part of the human condition, some have an addictive personality, and that is what leads to the problems, as they either cannot stop (addiction) or do not stop (poor judgement) Addiction is the problem, as I said in the first place, which you seem to have overlooked.

  • Yes they are Kevin. Just walk around the town on a Saturday night or visit A and E. Its costing the NHS millions. If you don't think gambling is a problem just ask Michael Chopra and many like him whose families have been ruined.

  • Paul Jewell cant get the players he wants, and they dont want to come to us. The manager can only sell the club to players , up to them then.

  • Bookies are rarely wrong and I can only keep my fingers crossed they are proved to be right again.....Still, little prospect Evans and Clegg would be able to find the right man to take charge so the question has to be asked why bother ? Lets all just bumble along through another cr** season and another, and another, an another, and.........

  • The bookies are rarely wrong and let's hope they are not on this occasion. Falling attendnaces, boring one up front football (first 8 months), poor transfers, Dad's Army transfer policy, dreadful results - including the worst run since 1993 - need we go on? Oh yes, two places and one point worse off than the season before (last year). 19 months of mainly utter rubbish. PJ OUT! A truely poor manager.

  • I don't mind being in mid-table and I'll back the manager if ITFC appear to be developing players, playing consistent attractive football and managing their resources (players) well. Was that a pig flying over my house ............

  • Spartacus, we would not mind your critisism if]you knew what you were on about, but it is not PJ that brings players into the club, he simply makes recomendations then either ME refuses to pay the fee or SC refuses to pay the wages. Simple as that

  • Rex, gambling, alcohol and many other things are not the problem, as millions are able to gain pleasure from these lawful activities. Sadly, some people suffer from addictive personalities, and that is part of the human condition. As far as the betting is concerned, I would think Jewell and Kean are the two favourites, and as we playBlackburn in the first game of the season, the loser (if there is one) of that game would be clear favourite in my view. To make it even more explosive, Blackburn are looking to buy Jordan Rhodes.

  • SURELY Steve Kean has to be favourite? He has to get Blackburn flying to keep his job whereas not far off 6th place by xmas would surely keep Jewell in his job? And on the money he is on i very much doubt he'd quit! If those are the odds of him being first to go, i'd like to know what the odds are of him NOT being the first to go - i'd have a bet if they were decent!

  • 22 days to save his ITFC stint.... although time seems to have already run out (17 months ago from my point of view). Not enough players brought in, the same problems unsolved 20 months in, contradictory jibber still exiting his mouth and I fear we are about to embark on another of Jewell's loan-a-go-rounds that badly affected us last year, relegated Sheff Utd the year before & results in younger players not getting time on the pitch. I'm hoping I'm proved wrong but, like his tactics, Jewell seems way too easy to read unfortunately.
