NEW signing Elliott Hewitt will have to wait beyond the start of the season to make his Ipswich Town debut as he continues his recovery from hip surgery.

The 18-year-old defender – who became manager Paul Jewell’s first signing of the summer when he joined from League Two club Macclesfield last month on a three year deal – missed the last few months of the 2011/12 campaign following an operation on his left hip, which was followed by the same surgery procedure on his right side in May.

Elliott’s rehabilitation is now underway but he is not expected to be in contention for a first-team place until October.

“We knew about Elliott’s situation before we completed the deal and it’s no problem,” said Jewell.

“Our medical people spoke to the surgeon and a hip specialist and everyone is pleased with the way he is recovering.

“We will have him working with the rest of the group as soon as he’s at that fitness level but he’s a young lad, one for the future.

“We were tracking him through the whole of last season and we’re delighted to have him here. There were a lot of clubs interested in him. He’s a good player already and he’s only going to get better.”

  • I will happily drive Jewell to White Hart Lane, and give him a packed lunch. All free.

  • Brian, please point out one entry where I have indicated that PJ is a hero, I simply want to see the correct person blamed for our situation and that is ME. Why can you not accept that it stands to reason any manager would like the best players available but can only spend the money that is available. Do you not accept that ME has taken more out of the team than he has put into it.

  • Cyril, no approach yet from Spurs, for your hero Jewell to replace Harry Rednapp.

  • The Snake# Don't forget the serious knee cruciate ligament damage which certainly classifies him as suspect !!!!!

  • mike benham, thanks for your comment BUT I certainly am not happy with Jewell and wonder what gives you the impression that I am. Not only is he a joke among some ticket holders( there are some on here who think he is a good manager, but don't include me) but we, as a club, are a joke through the football league

  • Typical, the boy has not kicked a ball for itfc yet and Jewell has made a bad signing. The club, not Jewell have taken a chance on a player who is recovering from injury for £100000 not exactly a disaster if it does not work out. The club have checked with the surgeon and had a satisfactory report, what more could they do.

  • BrianMike, calm down dears. People much more qualified have said that the lad is progressing well. He looks an outstanding prospect, credit where it's due for a change? And as for Davis, a fractured skull hardly classifies him as injury prone.

  • Of course, Jewell, it's no problem except that he was your one and only new signing, as yet, for next season. Perhaps you should hurry to sign Steve Davis from Derby who should by reputation give you a couple of games before injury. really man, you are beyond belief and there are those on here who will still say you are a good manager !!!!!
