MANAGER’S REACTION: Paul Jewell embarrassed to lead his side on ‘lap of appreciation’

IPSWICH Town manager Paul Jewell admits he felt embarrassed to lead his side of a ‘lap of appreciation’ after the Blues’ home campaign finished with a limp 3-0 defeat to Millwall.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The counter-attacking Lions scored three of their four shots on target to seal their fifth straight victory, with Grant Leadbitter seeing a penalty saved at 2-0 by in-form veteran keeper Maik Taylor.

Town were well below par though, with Jewell calling the performance ‘laborious’ and ‘milky’.

Just a few hundred out of a crowd of 18,947 stayed behind at the end as the sheepish players came out to the centre circle, applauded all four stands and then quickly headed back down the tunnel.

“It was difficult to go back out there at the end, but we owed it to the supporters who stayed to show our appreciation,” said Jewell. “It’s embarrassing a little bit, but some young kids had stayed and we owed it to them to go back out there.

“We would have liked it to have been on a happier note, but you’ve got to bite the bullet haven’t you?”

Reflecting on the game, Jewell said: “It was really disappointing. We had lots of the ball but didn’t do a lot with it. Prior to this we’d lost just three games in 17, but today we were slow and lethargic. It was just a bit laborious, a bit laboured, a bit milky – all the things we were when we were struggling reared their head again today.

“Let’s keep things in perspective though, we’ve done okay in the second half of the season. It’s only four defeats in 18, we’ve got 30 points out of whatever it is, but we accept that leaving the home supporters with a performance like that was unacceptable.”

He added: “I’ve not seen anything I didn’t know. We are where we are, not because we’ve been unlucky, but because we haven’t been good enough.

“One time we were looking at a relegation fight, we got over that, but today we’ve been caught on a sucker punch.

“They were bad goals we gave away, but the defence over the last 16/17 games has been pretty tight. Today, all over as a unit we were second best.”

The Blues boss added: “It’s horrible getting beat like that at home, but we can’t go away from here thinking it’s the end of the world. We didn’t play well, we’ve been punished by a team that’s come and done a job on us, but since January we’ve played really well and showed top six form.

“Today we’ve been beaten 3-0 – that’s the Championship for you. I’m not happy about it, but I already knew the reason we’re 15th place in the league with 58 points is because we haven’t been good enough in too many games.

“The second half of the season has been acceptable, but we’re paying a price for the first half.”

Asked if he felt some his players were already in holiday mode, Jewell concluded: “It’s easy saying that now, but no-one was saying that on Tuesday night (following an impressive display against Birmingham).

“The players haven’t taken their foot off the peddle in training at all. That performance today was very unlike Ipswich since the turn of the year.

“We know people have gone home disappointed today, but that was a bit of a one-off in terms of the second half of the season. That’s the first time of late that we’ve been beaten where I thought we deserved to be beaten.”

I have asked the moderator on several occasions what influence Mr Evans wields over the local press to warrant this perceived degree of censorship, but as usual no reply is received. It must be very nice for the moderator to hide behind his or her's shield of anonymity.

This is the most glorious period in our history with the most tactically astute manager operating today. So popular is he that the stands rise as one when he enters the arena. Then our hearts are lifted even further by the site of our dearly beloved CEO, whose steady hand and strategic insights are the pride of Portman Rd and the envy of all far beyond. Our angel, our saviour, our mysterious benefactor is at the very top of our christmas card lists and we welcome with open bank accounts his policies, his largesse and his understanding of the history of our club. I am breathless in anticipation of next season and the new, unchartered territory that we shall be in. I .hope that's fine.

You know very well that PJ got Sharp to come down but Clegg was not prepared to pay the money. Just relax Kevin, PJ is still here despite the efforts of the eadt and yourself. Contracts are made to be honoured. I am sure if or when you were a working man you would have expected nothing less.

  • He should be embarrassed, not just for losing 3-0 to Millwall but for the whole season. He did well to plug the leaks after Keane left (one could well argue HE should have been given a lot longer, but his reign was a disaster from the minute he panicked in the transfer market) but Jewell has taken us nowhere in the last 12 months. We will need serious investment in long term playing staff and a very good start to next season if we're to avoid another mid season sacking and patch up job. Don't get me wrong, JET, Creswell and Drury have proved to be very good signings, Chopra too to a lesser extent, but the fiasco with goal keepers, centre backs and short term signings largely past their use by date have done the damage in a season when we had a great chance to get a play off place. At the present rate, we'll be a mid table side for years to come, and it really pains me to say so.

  • Cyril.....money WAS available, a point that you seem not to be able to grasp, and was wasted. By Jewell, the man you seem to think is blameless. You ask me to be fair, Jewell asked us to judge him at the end of the season. I am. The second half is even worse than the first half, and Jewell chose to sign Bowyer, Ellington and Ingmarrson, and IF money was tight, all the more reason not to waste it on the Ellington and Ingmarrson in particular. So, Cyril, using the parameters set by your own comments, your man is bang to rights. Jewell is out of his depth, and hopefully will soon be out of his job. In view of the fact that he has plenty of money compared t the average man in the street, I shall be 'pleased' when he goes.

With money not available what else could he do than go for free transfers and loanees which are never going to be your best players. Just be fair and accept the trouble lays upstairs and not with PJ, I accept he made some strange decisions but as I said he knows more about it than you or I. RK and PJ were let down by ME

  • Cyril, he has nobody to blame but himself, he chose to bring on GKs on loan, when he could have brought in a loanee in any position. He chose to sign Ingmarrson and Ellington, each a complete and total waste of money. Also Bowyer to a lesser degree, and it was Jewell who chose to play Bullard at the base of the diamond earlier in the season, which may well have contributed to Jimmy's lack of form, when he should have played Hyam at the base of the diamond protecting the back four all along, and when he DID eventually do this, we had our only decent run of the season, only for Luke to be discarded for the ageing Bowyer, thereby depriving the back-four of protection, and the midfield of energy and tempo. SO, frankly, your assertion that Jewell has not had the players he wanted is nonsense, and his inability to select the right team has been a big weakness. I know more about man management than Jewell, based on what I have see him do this season, and frankly, I think most of us can see that whatever he did right at Bradford and Wigan, has been overshadowed by the dreadful job he did at Derby, Wednesday, and now here. Southampton have done well because they didn't sell their best players, or allow them to walk away for nothing, because they have not alienated their fan base, and because their manager is streets ahead of Jewell, who is a dinosaur. He is going to do to us what he did to derby if he is not removed forthwith

Otherwise, the alternative is to give PJ until Christmas and either sack him or give him a new contract. You don’t want to be going into the last weeks of next season with a manager with a few weeks left on his deal, so the options are either have another dismal first 5 months of a season and then make a change, or consign us to years of mediocrity under PJ. I don’t like to say it, but PJ has to go.

I am a life long supporter from up the A140, but the one thing I miss is being at Carra Rud to support my team, but out here in Aus, my second port of call is always to see how the old enemy have done, and this year you seem to have been awful, at one stage in fact looking as if you would finish in a relegation fight, and although many will say it is sour grapes, I actually think it would have done you good, to go down, rebuild, and gain that winning enthusiasum. I have to agree with a previous poster, Richard Proctor, that you ned players who are not chasing the money, but playing for the badge on the shirt, and besides having a young and enthusistic manager, the players have points to prove, none even Grant Holt, complaining when left on the bench. I hope things inprove for ITFC next year, what East Anglia really needs is 2 clubs in the Premier League, it would be brilliant for the area

  • Absolutely appalling behaviour by most of our under performing players. Their actions, which should have been condemned by their manager Jewell, shows just how much they appreciate the loyal supporters of ITFC , a fact which should lead to a wide refusal to renew season tickets until ME make drastic changes to his managerial staff which leads to the promises he made when taking control of our club. If he was as astute as his reported success in business claim, then surely he must have detected the unrest from many supporters and the dwindling attendances. While this latest sorry saga shows the contempt with which supporters are viewed by the ITFC administration it is highly unlikely ME will make the necessary changes as they would result in another 'egg on his face' situation bur where is Clegg? He is becoming as invisible as his boss.

  • I am astounded at Jewell's comments suggesting that the performances in the second half of the season have been acceptable. We have played 22 games, won 7, drawn 7 and lost 8, giving us 28 points, or 1.27 per game. In the first 23 games, we obtained 30 points, at an average of 1.30 points per game, which is actually better than the second half of the season! The man is utterly clueless, and those that think we have done better in the second half of the season would do well to look at the facts, which are that at present we are doing worse, and even if we win at Doncaster, we will have obtained 31 points in the second half of the season, compared to 30 in the first half. What concerns me, is that the last 14 games have seen us win just 3 times, draw 6 times, and lose 5 times, with 15 points, or an average of 1.07 per game, or relegation form. So, Jewell suggesting that the Millwall result is a blip, in a strong second half of the season, compared to a weak first half, is a victory for Scouse invention over fact.

My point was, and is, that with a CEO more interested in turnstiles and Olympics than football, how could it end well? It will get much worse yet, as the Championship was the weakest for years this season, and we blew it. Next year it will be much, much stronger, and we may well struggle even more without a change in ethos, a change in the relationship between the club and it's supporters, a change in CEO< and a change in manager. It may well be that I am completely wrong, and it will all be fine next season, as Clegg is a genius, and Jewell is a manager with huge talent.

A dreadful end to a dreadful season, and I am wondering how anything will change, with the same inept management structure ruining both the club and the team. It says it all that a signing from league one (deservedly) won player of the year, with the runner up being a 33 year old, not even playing in his proper position. To those, like Tom, who seems to think that I am in a minority, and I am negative, I say look at the comments on here, look at the falling crowds, and look how Millwall dismantled us on Saturday. (By the way take a look at his record on wikepedia), we should have been looking at more lower league players.like cresswell and drury, bringing the young in ,as is our tradition. And to finish my rant Paul Jewell say he is embarressed, try thinking like a supporter of this half hearted, rubbish, and take a look at our neighbours in norfolk, and that hurt me as well,no big stars, just a team of players proud of playing for the badge on their shirts, proud to play for their manager, just like we used to do.

  • Very disappointing result, and again no young players in the side. The Millwall and Doncaster games were perfect for Cropper, Ainsley, Carson, Lawrence etc to gain valuable experience. Instead we had Sonko who is leaving and Leadbitter who seems reluctant to sign a new contract both playing, and Bowyer an unused sub who will also probably be leaving. I think PJ is a nice and decent bloke, but that isn't good enough in football management. However, I don't think PJ is necessarily a bad manager. Holloway was bad at Leicester but has been absolutely brilliant at Blackpool. Pardew had a bad time at Southampton, but look at Newcastle now with him in charge. PJ worked wonders at Bradford and Wigan, but has been poor at Derby and Ipswich. I think PJ is perhaps an ok manager, but not the man to take Ipswich Town forward. He may do very well at another club, but I doubt he ever will at Portman Road. If he remains, I think next season will result in another mid table finish having flirted briefly with both the play offs and relegation. I also still think Clegg needs to go. Respect can be won by admitting to mistakes. We are all human, and we all make mistakes. I hope Marcus Evans will win the respect of the supporters by admitting his mistakes in appointing both Jewell and Clegg, and rectify both as soon as possible.

Once cresswell went off the pitch it was extremely difficult to focus on any redeeming facets remaining in the side , indeed the most damning observation to be mentioned is the progress this football team has made whilst under the influence of paul jewels management , it is quite simply non - existent , where is the youthful exuberance that would at least have given some town supporters a shred of hope and enthusiasm for next season ? .... well by and large those under the age of 21 have considered themselves fortunate to have made 2 consecutive appearances on the substitutes bench , which , given that safety was achieved 6 weeks ago is nothing short of criminal , exasperated by the fact that the players he has selected have managed to amass a mere handful of championship points in this period . Obviously everyone who regularly posts on here has the best interests of the club at heart and i would even suggest mr steroo should be included in that statement , otherwise why would we bother expressing our points in the first place. I agree with many , many others whose comments i have read throughout this season that paul jewel is not the right man to be managing this football club and i do not believe anything will change to our benefit whilst he remains here .I doubt too many of us will be looking forward to next season with a great deal of relish.

If this was the case, they (players and club officials) should be ashamed of themselves. An end of season P(ublic) R(elations) disaster.
