WITH his impending move to Ipswich Town almost complete, Anthony Wordsworth must adapt to the higher intensity of Championship life, according to his former manager.
WITH his impending move to Ipswich Town almost complete, Anthony Wordsworth must adapt to the higher intensity of Championship life, according to his former manager.
The Blues are believed to be spending in the region of £100,000 to take the U’s midfielder to Portman Road, with the 24-year-old midfielder out-of-contract in the summer.
Wordsworth made his name as a goalscoring playmaker under Aidy Boothroyd, before John Ward continued to nurture the 6ft 1ins youngster’s talents, and he is expected to join on-loan Wolves defender Richard Stearman, who signed for the rest of the season yesterday, at Portman Road.
Speaking exclusively to the East Anglian Daily Times, Ward believes Wordsworth is still a work in progress but admitted the midfielder had chosen wisely in opting to team up with Blues boss Mick McCarthy and assistant manager, Terry Connor.
“Anthony is a good character and could not have signed for a better club if he wants to realise his potential, as he is still developing as a player,” insisted Ward, now in charge of League Two outfit, Bristol Rovers.
“He will possibly have to quicken up his game as he steps up a level and I have watched Ipswich this season and they play with a good tempo and pace.
“Mick McCarthy’s mantra demands his players work hard, are full of energy and are in the opposition’s face
“Anthony is an acquired taste. He has a languid style and people assume he is lazy, but that is not the case with him, either as a person or a player.
“Some Colchester fans might be pleased to see him go because of that, but the more considered view will be that Ipswich have signed a very good footballer.
“He has a very good left foot and can score goals. I know Terry Connor and how he works with young players, while Mick (McCarthy) is a good man. They have got a good player.
“I hope it works out for Anthony, this is a good move for the young man, and I hope it works out for Mick as I like both of them.”

You know all I see is negative comments and its really getting on my nerves. I am only 21 and live in rotherham I go to every away game that I can and I am out of work currently buy stil even though I have seen some dire performances one being Barnsley and hull where we got battered from start to finish I still live my club enough to get fully behind them. Look at Jon Walters , came from Chester now with stoke scoring in top flight, what we need is some flair, Martin can provide bits of it but not enough so let's give this lad a chance and get behind the team. If we go down yeah let's all have a moan or two but then get behind the lads once again as we are the tractorboys!! COYB!

To a team in Colchester's position a £100,000 is a lot of money and seeing as he's a free agent at season's end they would be a bit silly not to take the cash now. Also this represents a worthwhile shot in the dark for Town and if they were relegated they would either have an asset or not have a huge investment to off load. This type of deal, along with loanees is I'm afraid all we will see in this transfer window, due to inflated prices and our current position. More will become clear in the next few weeks.

Again, why can't people let the lad get a shirt on his back and play some football before they start getting stuck in?! It wasn't all that long ago contributors to this site were calling for the club to buy players from lower divisions wanting to make the step up. No pleasing some, is there?

Jason would you have asked the same question of Jermain Defoe when west ham went down? They are not happy to see him go- but in the summer he can walk for free. So they are taking the money and we are spending some so hopefully everyone will cheer up. He seems to be well thought of. Lets hope MM can get the best out of him
