TOWN boss Paul Jewell has admitted he rushed into signing players last summer – suggesting he was swayed by big reputations.
On the week, he claimed Marcus Evans had made mistakes by “throwing money” at signings when he took over at Ipswich, Jewell, not for the first time, has also pointed the finger at himself.
As he enters the final year of his contract, it is Jewell’s ability to make the right signings that will make or break him.
And he goes into it admitting he has not always had the right recruitment policy.
He said: “Certainly last summer, we were just going after whoever was available. We weren’t patient enough – if someone came on the market, we would take him. Look at Ivar Ingimarsson, Lee Bowyer, Jimmy Bullard.
“Maybe we should sit back and have more of a plan. Target players earlier – which we have been – improve our scouting network both at home and abroad, to make it even wider, and hopefully we will have more of a choice of players to decide on.”
Town have again been linked with Paul Green, the midfielder Jewell signed when manager of Derby County but who has decided to leave the Rams on a free transfer this summer.
Green will play his final game for the Rams in tonight’s Derbyshire Senior Cup final against Buxton before a string of Championship clubs line up to entice him to their club.
Ipswich, Hull City, Leeds United and MIddlesbrough are all said to be interested in the 29-year-old free agent.

Tom, you have not read my post properly. I have stated that those who are unhappy with our performance, yet are happy with Jewell are not thinking clearly, and I have also stated clearly when I am expressing my view. I believe Jewell's actions and words of late have been idiotic. That is NOT a personal remark, as I am saying that with a degree of logic, and clarifying that I do not dislike him personally. You need to read my posts more carefully, then you may find that you will not then need to argue with a version that I have not actually written.

Kevin, it is of course entirely arrogant to assume you are completely right and that there are no shades of grey. Clarity of thought indeed?! You put your views forward as if they are fact, when they are simply your own views on the subject. Plenty of people agree with you and plenty disagree with you. These are value judgments at the end of the day and I think that they stem from a care for the club. The debate of PJ is academic because ME has made it clear he won't be sacked, so all you do by continually stirring up ill-feeling is to cause disharmony. To call someone an idiot then claim you are not making personal remarks is an oxymoron.

P.s. No more players who have seen their best years elsewhere please. Please don't buy any over 25s it just ddn't work because we bought cheaper players who were passed their best and lacked the hunger we need!

His comments make NO sense. More than anything Ipswich need a manager who can deliver the basics. PJ has proved that he cannot deliver....this season has been dismal and a disaster in every way. We have gone backwards and are not even an average side now. He couldn't do it this season, with no progress made at all.... Unless you call losing 1000s of supporters a week success! This is no way to run a football club. I would have preferred relegation with Roy Keane, a massive clear out including Clegg and then rebuild with manager and new young players. Sadly, I predict that we will be in the same position again in 12 months unless heads roll.

Tom, based on Jewell's absurd actions and statements of the last week, I have simply stated that I believe he is an idiot to make such statements, and carry out such actions. I repeat that he is a likeable man, he would be great as my neighbour, so I can assure you that it is NOT personal. It is my considered view, based on the matters I have explained at the beginning of the post which you are reading. The destruction (in my view) of our younger players, and the undeniable lack of ambition he is showing, and the failure to actually use the last two fixtures, and the final game at Doncaster constructively, has crystallised my view that the sooner he leaves, the better. My offer to give him a lift is generous, not viscous, and I have a clarity of thought that those who wonder why we are struggling, yet support Jewell lack.

Kevin, your posts are becoming more personally vicious and offensive towards PJ. You earlier posts were more coherent when at least you put forward structured reasons. You simply posted previously that was "an idiot".

If Jewell needs a lift to his home back in the north west, then I would happily drive him there, free of charge, as long as he stayed there

Mike Mott, if as you say Jewell is planning an exit strategy the I and a lot of other supporters would feel inclined to support him. However, judging him by his planning of tactics, team selections and signings, he doesn't appear to be capable of planning. FULL STOP.

Less of the 'we' please Mr Jewell. And don't forget you panicked again in the transfer window and were only saved by ALL your targets refusing to join.

If I was PJ the first thing I would plan to do is to shut up! This appears to be the actions of someone who is planning an exit strategy

PJ uses the word "We" as if to share the blame. ME may have parted with his money, Clegg may have done the negotiating but who put the names forward for purchase- surely PJ?? Neither Clegg or ME would have bought those players in off their own back.

Tom, it's really not about Jewell being big enough to accept mistakes and move on, it's about supporters being expected to fork out hard earned cash for the privilege of accepting HIS continued mistakes after being told by our CEO Clegg that here was an experienced man who had tasted success and failure previously. Oh why did it have to be ITFC where he continues failure ?

We are a laughing stock, simple as that, and it matters not whether it is Clegg, Jewell or Evans, they all say whatever comes int their heads at that moment, and then proceed to act in a completely different manner. John Burls, you are clearly entitled to think that Jewell saved us from relegation last season, yet I, and many others do not believe for a moment we would have got relegated under Keane. Some do, yes, although the evidence of the performances this season suggest that they are living in the land of wishful thinking. Tom, Bullard could have perhaps had a different season had he not been switched to play at the base of a diamond. Had Hyam been picked there, and Bullard played instead of the poorly selected 'captain GL, then who knows what would have happened. The club has alienated itself, and supporters are becoming angrier and more disillusioned as a result. Where is the CEO? Is Jewell making these comments in order to facilitate his own removal? Who knows....tune in next week to the soap opera that ITFC, a Marcus Evans Company, has become.

This would all be very well if I believed him. But this man has stuck to practically nothing that he has said. He promised to give youth more of a chance and yet he won’t even trust them in a dead-rubber of a game on the last day of the season. He is a man of words but no action and I don’t believe for a moment we have seen a change of attitude from PJ.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing - last summer, fans were clamouring for Bullard's signature and accusing the club of lacking ambition if Evans didn't fork out the £18,000 a week or whatever Bullard is on. Bowyer also looked a good bet - he had played reasonably well in the Premiership the season before and had experience. Chopra - again, a proven striker at this level (though query how far the club investigated or were aware of his other issues). Ingarmarson had also had a good season with Reading and suffered an injury soon after joining us that effectively ended his career. Not sure about Ellington - he was clearly declining and I think was a panic buy based on previous form in years gone by for PJ- but JET and Cressewell have done well. The loanees were essential because our defence at the time were in dire straits and CollinsSonkoStockdale for a time steadied the ship. Strange that PJ openly undermines himself and the club like this - though at least he is big enough to accept mistakes and move on. Hopefully that will allow us to do better this season.

Signs akll in sundry...a disaster then offers a scholar a one year deal on 10k a year then wants him to pay three quarters of it for board and keep ....absolutely laughable and as for Cklegg the stories coming out of the club about him are embarrassing

I find it quite incredible that over the last few days we have had to witness the comments coming from pj,when he was appointed the CEO said we have gone for experience and knowledge of this league, well why still all the same old mistakes as made at another club already mentioned, some of the decision making at this club since the new owner took over has been baffling to say the least, what we need is a defensive coach, and players able to step up to what they are asked to do,for far to many seasons now this is an area that has consistently let the club down,as for the scouting network if we were to blood youngsters earlier instead of the old pros in meaningless matches the next season would get off the ground at least at a canter, instead what are we doing shedding youngsters and assembling another squad, that will do wonders for having a settled team tongue in cheek

An idiot or not KB, at least he saved us from the ignomy of relegation. Now he has a (last) chance to push ahead and show what he can do. Nothing to do with us but wasn't that an absolutely brilliant win for Chelsea (Cleggie's club so he once told us) last night. So pleased for Torres. And Jon Stead of course at Bristol City. Why can't it ever be us?!

If there is one area where town should not need additions (if he considers ALL his options) it is midfield. The first reports of next seasons targets should be defenders in most positions & goal scoring striker & another keeper. Alternatively he could give the younger players a chance - especially as he seems to be admitting mistakes signing Bowyer Bullard & Ingimarrson. But here's the thing about Jewell - whatever he says - however many times he appears to change his mind - his is in fact capable of ploughing just the one furrow - & all his mistakes will be repeated next season. I'd be tempted to call him a 'one trick pony' - if only I could find out what that trick is ????

Surely the word panic or 'panic buying' should not be associated with a man who has over 600 games experience as a manager over two decades!!!! Also to blame the benefactor for throwing money away?????? Whose advice? ME must believe this is a step too far. Other managers have had the bullet without public condemnation of boardroom and better results. Thanks PJ you tried your best and we had some laughs along the way but its time up.

Where was the experience ME assured us that Jewell had when he appointed him ? Admitting he made mistakes, has Jewell learned nothing from his disastrous time at Derby ? Can supporters trust him to make the correct decisions if he remains here next season? The more that Ips.Star prints quotes from Jewell and his admissions of his mistakes the more unsuitable he appears to be as ITFC manager. It is really unbelievable that this man has any support at all from the ranks of true ITFC supporters.
