JASON Scotland may be on the verge of signing a new contract at Ipswich Town, but that has not stopped manager Paul Jewell sounding out free agent Ricardo Fuller over a potential move to Portman Road.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

After playing an important part in the Blues’ season – often as an impact sub – it’s understood that striker Scotland will finally pen a new one-deal deal upon his return from holiday in his native Trinidad.

Like fellow Trinidadian club-mate Carlos Edwards, it will be on reduced terms with a clause entitling him to an automatic second year if he starts a certain number of games next season.

Jewell is still keen to further strengthen a forward line which remains thin on the ground though.

And a source close to Stoke City has told the EADT that enquiries have been made by the Blues regarding what it would take to bring forward Fuller to Suffolk.

At 32 years of age, the former Jamaica international does not fit into Jewell’s switch in policy – the Blues boss having promised fans that he was looking to bring in ‘young and hungry’ players rather than experienced professionals dropping down from the top-flight at the end of their careers.

However, with Edwards, Scotland, Damien Delaney and the out-of-favour duo of Jimmy Bullard and Nathan Ellington the only players currently aged over 30 in the squad, the Blues boss feels there is still scope to add of at least one established name.

Potters fans have voiced their disappointment at Fuller being released this summer following a return of 50 goals from more than 200 appearances at the Premier League club.

And Blues supporters will remember him fondly from his brief loan spell at Portman Road in 2006, the then Southampton player scoring twice in three games before the Potters beat Town to his £500,000 signature that summer.

  • Cyril - thought I'd got this one through - but now appears to be missing - so will try again. Can only repeat that my claim was simply that at one time there were 2 people called Old Timer on this site - NEVER - & I'm sure others contributers will confirm - that this was as a result of 2 people having the same email address. Even with my limited knowledge I would have known this was not possible. Therefore as your repeated calling me a liar was based on this wrong assumption - I think you should now admit your mistake & give me an unreserved apology !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh dear Cyril - you still don't get it do you ??? For there to have been 2 Old Timers on this site for a period of time would have required nothing more than for EADT to accept 2 contributers with the same pseudonym - nothing more. Of course it's impossible for 2 people to have the same email address & I NEVER said it was - if this is my 'lie' then you owe me an unreserved apology !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nanaimo jack@ Do I detect a touch of sarcasm? I do not believe the correspondents on this site that call for young players think for one moment that all 30+ players are over the hill and cannot last the pace. However if you would just open your eyes you must surely admit that the ones selected by Jewell and have opted for ITFC are hardly in the category of Pirlo as you seem to believe and have demonstrated little ability to replicate their previous form or prove capable of playing at the pace required for 90 minutes. I suggest you dream on because it looks like that is all you will have next season.

Remember it is not possible for two people to have the same e-mail address, check with an expert which I am not. • I hear we are looking at Pirlo but at 33 surely he cant play at Championship level for 90 minutes! O no Ipswich Fans believe only under 25's can last the pace. He will have to play at a lesser level showing so called premiership players how to last the pace!!!!!!--for 120 minutes!

  • Ricardo Fuller, If there is any truth in PJ chasing him would have been a great signing when Joe Royle wanted him, but alas we had no money. Ironic really isn't it, now we have money we can get him for free, only problem is it's too many years to late. I vote no to wanting Fuller as he's just another journeyman in the last throws of a decent career. Why is it that we always have to accept yesterdays men? Probably because today's men won't set foot in PR.

  • Yet again, no quotes from anyone near the club. If the EADT can't get quotes or stories from within our club, how are we to believe that they have reliable sources else where? Fuller would not be my first choice but for a squad without any depth, as often stated on this site, I would put him at a higher class than Ellington who we were lumbered with last year. Yet another story to whip up feelings and hits on the site!!!

  • Cyril - You also misunderstand polling....You don't have to take a vote from every single fan merely a representative sample....That's how polls work and why they are generally very accurate (viewing figures for TV shows, general election exit polls etc)..Don't panic in any case because it seems the majority welcome this news - why is beyond me though !!

  • Cyril - You are in part right....ME does indeed not want to invest in ITFC - In fact it is my firm belief that he has never really invested in ITFC ever but merely increased the debt owed to him by the club (not real investment in my book)....But why are you so anti people voicing well reasoned concern (or moaning as you call it) ??....You yourself wouldn't have chosen Fuller so are you not in agreement with others on here that you label as "moaners" ?? You labelled me as not a true supporter during last season and I suggested we talk over my poor support (season ticket holder since 1984 btw) for the club during a pre-match pie & pint at the Burnley away game and guess what - silence from you....and that my friend is because you never go to home games let alone away fixtures....I say let all those who have really invested in the club i.e. the fans that do go to games have their say - they have earned that right more than somebody like you who criticises them from the comfort of an armchair !!! As for Fuller - no, no, no and no.....Bargain basement, premiership cast-off !!! More of the same old c**p - this is the reality of Marcus Evans' investment....nothing.

  • Wait a moment, has anybody heard PJ say he is interested in this player, even the eadt does not claim this. The eadt runs another poll which they will claim represents the club when in fact it represents less than 1% of supporters.

  • There isn't a great deal of activity around the championship at present, although a small number of clubs have made judicious signings, not least Leicester and Brighton. Not that this presents a cause for optimism! How many of these stories have roots in fact is hard discern. For instance, what happened to the French youngster we were supposedly in the process of signing? I'm prepared to wait until mid-July to see if Jewell says what he means regarding the 'young and hungry'. The shape of the squad will certainly determine how many times I go to PR; although the replacement of Clegg by a CEO of substance and (the right) experience may make me invest in a season ticket.

Sadly things will get even worse when Jewell starts trawling amongst the rejects bin for elderly, injury-prone unemployed defenders

  • Whether the speculation has substance or not the facts offered are pretty selective. There may only be 5 players over 30 but this is the writer deciding that under 30= inexperienced squad. It ignores that Chopra is 28.6 yrs old, Drury is 28.6, Lee-Barrett is over 28 and Stevenson is almost 28. You also wouldn't suggest that Lee Martin(25) & Jaime Peters(25) are inexperienced. So, factually, from first team squad of 19 we have 11 experienced professionals. I wouldn't suggest that we flood the first team with youths, just that we give them a fair chance (as ever, how do they get experienced without, ahem, getting experience) and this is problem Jewell has failed with his whole managerial career (a disappointing fact). I hope he has learned. As far as Fuller goes, why again would we sign a striker that won't score? Sure, he has skill and tenaciousness, but I'd prefer a chance be given to a younger striker in the lower leagues.
