IPSWICH Town have missed out on a major transfer target after Brighton Albion signed goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak on a free transfer following his release from Manchester United.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Albion boss Gus Poyet said he was delighted to have won the race for the in-demand Polish international, 30.

He told the club’s website: “There were clubs in England and abroad interested in Tomasz, but it says a lot for the ambition of this club that he wanted to sign for Brighton.

“We had been tracking his progress for some time and he will provide real competition to both Casper Ankergren and Peter Brezovan for the goalkeeper’s jersey this coming season – and that can only be a good thing for the team moving forward.”

Kuszczak started his career as a youth player at Slask Wroclaw in his homeland before moving to lower league German outfit Uerdingen in 1999.

He then signed for Bundesliga outfit Hertha BSC two years later but having failed to make a single first-team appearance, he moved to The Hawthorns in 2004.

Catching the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson towards the end of his first season, Kuszczak moved to Manchester United for £2.1m in July 2007 after a season on loan at Old Trafford.

  • Cyril, I posted a reply to your comments regarding ME unwilling to invest further in ITFC but our Site Moderator rejected it as reason 'other'. Then I posted again referring to 'the invisible man' but was again moderated with no reason given, I say moderated as it has not yet appeared. I know you are often critical about EADT journalism but you don't believe a type of censorship is being implemented do you ?

  • Cyril, I actually posted a response in agreement with your post and elaborated your comment concerning 'he shall remain invisible' but the EADT Site Moderator rejected it once more as reason 'other' whatever that means. Does any other posters have their comments moderated? It seems to me that it is rapidly getting to a position of censorship, where the EADT will only print what meets their agenda and again I would ask what influence does 'he who must remain invisible' exert over this paper to restrict any criticism of himself ?

  • Couldn’t agree more Old Timer. We need to be going for younger hungrier players, but I just feel we are currently – and have been since the RK days and even worse now – reluctant to sell the club and the area. All the vibes coming out from the management are negative. ‘The area is a backwater’, ‘we have no money’, ‘we can’t chance the best for our youngsters’. It’s exactly the opposite to what comes out from David McNally up the road who bigs up the club, the supporters and the area at every opportunity. How about we big this club up? The club of Ramsey, Robson, Burley, Muhren, Thijssen, Holland, grand European tradition, potential of 30,000 crowds in a stadium that has hosted full international football, a club that (should) give youngsters responsibility and opportunity in the first team with patient fans based in a beautiful part of the country? Instead SC, PJ and (admittedly to a lesser extent) RK at the time limit the club’s achievements and potential, seemingly taking every opportunity to downgrade our once great club.

  • Whether people like it or not, Ipswich and Norwich are remote from the rest of the country. Having said that, parts of Norfolk and Suffolk are outstanding areas of natural beauty, and the players either club are signing can afford to buy a good quality property in those areas. Personally, I think it is more down to the back-story of how the club is perceived from the outside, and Norwich have taken on Stephen Fry, as well as a dynamic CEO, and they did have a really keen manager, who achieved as a player at the top of the game, and had been preparing a target list of players and went out and got them. Now, I have never seen anyone disagree with the view that Magilton was doing a far better job without any money, than with it, and had Keane been allowed to buy the players he wanted, who knows what would have happened. The truth is, we are seen as mediocre, average, going nowhere, becalmed, and this, I am afraid, is not attractive. Yes, as I and other have said, we are still more attractive than League One and below, yet as our footballing attractions have diminished, the geographical factors have become more relevant, and were we a more attractive proposition on the pitch, then I don;t think geography would be as much of a factor. The fact we have a CEO who has no idea doesn't help, although the turnstiles look good, that won;t actually attract any players. I agree with Frank Weston that we should be all over Holland, as there are numerous players who could improve us. Anyway..... Paul Jewell said we would be ready for pre=season, and so far, as today marks the halfway point between our last competitive league match and our next one, we have signed one player, unfit until October. Truly appalling that the club seem incapable of learning from past mistakes, last year we had the contract fiasco, repeated once more, and we had the admission from Jewell regarding panic buys, and where are we heading again.... Panic buys FC

  • Mike - doesn't this all come back to the type of players we are trying to attract ?????? 'Established' players with a choice of several clubs may indeed be a bit picky about locations but young hungry players will simply be glad of the opportunity to play in the championship. While it is no longer of any great relevance I think RK does still live in the area - but more importantly to the point you make is that PK cannot even persuade his own wife to move here with him.!!!!!!

  • Old Timer, you’re quite right about RK and his love for the area (though I don’t believe he still lives here) and indeed PJ seems to like it too. But both have been guilty of making it an issue at times when we’ve missed out on players, openly saying that the area has put off some players. I don’t recall that being shouted from the rooftops at Carrow Road so I assume this is an excuse and not a real reason for players not wanting to come here. So everytime the powers-that-be mention it as the latest reason a player has decided against joining us it perpetuates the myth further and makes it harder to attract players.

  • Mike Rotch - while your comments may be spot on regarding Jewell - they could not be further from the truth re Keane. He loved Suffolk from day 1 - said it reminded him of county Cork & am sure he still lives in the area 18 months after his sacking ?????? Furthermore he insisted that all his players move to the area - to the extent that he terminated the contract of his first choice left back - Ben Thatcher - when he refused. We all know RK got some things wrong but plaese do not sully his legacy further by such inaccuracies.

  • Players obviously go for as much money as they can, it's a short working life liable to be cut short by injury at any time. Anyone would think football players are the only ones wanting to earn as much as possible.

  • Oh Dear, Oh Dear, Oh Dear. Please read every article on this sight regarding Kuszcak and please state where there is either a) a direct quote from ITFC, PJ or anyone remotely close that says we have offered him a contract, andor b) where he states that he 'turned down' ITFC. I am getting very tired of already negetive vibes being enhanced by storied pushed by this paper with 'sources close to' or 'insiders' or similar. As far as I am aware there have been 2 players that we have actually formally bid for (with quotes from ITFC), one we have signed and the other (J Ward) opted to go elsewhere. That is 5050 to date and we tend to sign players very quickly, i.e. there aren't many drawn out stories when we are serious about a player. We hear and within a few days they sign. Read what is written people and not what it is trying to say. Do not get me wrong, I am fully aware that we really need to strengthen and am sure we will but until PJ is quoted that we have bid for a player then I will hold my judgement on his signings (or indeed his deadening silence if we stand still and don't strengthen)

  • Problem is Keane and Jewell have spent the last three years between them knocking the club and knocking the area, effectively (and sometimes actually) stating Suffolk is a footballing and geographical backwater. Our history suggests the former is untrue and the success of Naaaaridge shows that the latter doesn’t need to be an issue if you have a plan that players can buy into. We have no plan. All we have is mixed messages from PJ, promising players who have been through our youth system discarded and ignored and a CEO who is cutting every penny without any notion the long-term consequences. ITFC can and should be an attractive prospect, but it needs placing back into the hands of someone who cares and will make it that again.

  • This is dissapointing of course but presumably as usual he is money motivated, That seems the only explanation given that he is going to a club where in Gus Poyets own words, he will provide competition to 2 other good golakeepers rather than coming to Ipswich where it is clear Jewell had him as number one. You would have thought in terms of reviving his career that the chance to be a big cog at town would have been very tempting so perhaps if its just money he's after we would be better looking elsewhere?

  • Here we go again. Yet another transfer target slips through our fingers. A recurring theme for at least five years. Not sure if we don't pay enough or are not seen as ambitious enough. If you go back to Magilton's time, it was hard work getting the likes of McAuley & Norris (hardly world beaters) to come to Portman Road. Then a year ago, Charlie Austin turned us down in favour of Burnley. Now it looks like Brighton are seen as having a brighter future than us. Perhaps Clegg & Co are right and ITFC must be run in a business-like way to survive in the long term. Tell you what though, I have a sneaking feeling that when PJ eventually leaves us, we'll find out just how hamstrung he has been by the financial men. Trouble is, if you were Marcus, you wouldn't want to repeat the squandering of millions by Magic & Royston. So what does it all mean, I confidently predict that 'you know who' (in Ged's absence) will revel in this latest setback to Jewell's plans. If I were PJ, I would sign Scott Loach as our new goalkeeper - a decent keeper and a Town supporter to boot.

Really hope i am wrong but untill Clegg-less backs Paul Jewell in the players he want we wont attract or sign the players needed here. I really hate to keep on moaning but can any one see things improveing in this way that will take us back to the premiership this season.... Might be surprised but not holding my breath.Once again lets see what we are given to play with? As the last thing we need is the same old soul destoying season of the last one...Mr Evans Prove me wrong......

A very decent keeper on a free and we simply go 'Oh, yeah maybe we want him but let's give it a few weeks', and surprise surprise we've misseed out again! Is Hewitt going to be our only signing? We have done next to nothing and its becoming very frustrating.

  • Earlier on today I posted that given he is reported to be our top target and given he would improve our squad he would almost certainly sign for somebody else........and guess what ?!?! This summer is just like last and a recurring theme at ITFC these days - PJ identifies his top targets and they sign elsewhere.....Whilst I'm no fan of PJ whatsoever you do have to ask what the bloke has to do to actually get in the players he wants ? If PJ can't get in his top targets (again) then he is fighting a losing battle. He could of course accept what many supporters have and that is that there will be little or no investment in the playing staff and he should look to within the club and try to improve the players he has if he thinks they are not yet good enough - perhaps he should start by trying to instill some confidence in ALB ?
