NOTTINGHAM Forest captain Luke Chambers is close to agreeing a free transfer switch to Championship rivals Ipswich Town.

The 26-year-old is out of contract after Saturday and though he has been coveted by Premier League sides in the past, his dip in form last year had seen that interest wane.

That has left the door open for Paul Jewell to swoop with a deal hoping to be concluded in time for the official start of pre-season in seven days time.

Sources close to the player have suggested that Forest boss Steve Cotterill has conceded that the stalling over his club’s takeover have forced the former City player of the year to look elsewhere.

And we understand Jewell is confident he will get his man – following the signing of promising teenage right-back Elliott Hewitt.

At least one new centre-back was a top priority for the Blues boss who currently just has left-footed duo Damien Delaney and Tommy Smith as options, with the latter in danger of missing the start of the season due to his Olympic involvement.

  • David, Clough was a master of psychology, rather like Mourinho is, and took pressure off of his players, and gave them responsibility, which, by and large they thrived on. He also had a strong sense of discipline, and the team had far fewer bookings and suspensions than their rivals. His last away game prior to retirement was a t Portman Road, in case you didn't know, and quite rightly he was given a standing ovation, and was actually quite emotional. Modern Forest, rather like modern Ipswich are a pale shadow of their former selves, and we have each been overtaken by many clubs, and have much to do to retain our current positions, never mind improve upon them. My understanding of Luke Chambers is that he is a fine player, who criticised the fans last season, which lead to a frostiness, resulting in him deciding to leave. Is that correct?

  • Then again Davidpayne, Forest are on the verge of being biought out by mrgs rich Kuwaiti family, so no more comparisons will be relevant. Chambers is average in Championship, no more.

  • Brian, Holloway achieved what Palace, Forest, Ipswich, Derby, Bristol City all aspire to. Promotion with a rabble of under-achievers, tossed away thirty somethings and some willing runners. It is a rare manager that creates a driven, harmonious group good enough to get in the top six let alone promoted. But rather like my own club, Forest, that is the model Town fans must embrace as the future. The years of moderate to lavish spending - in the context of Championship with distant Premier League history - are gone. The FFP will be welcome to some extent though provides advantage to the newly demoted but it may, I hope, force erratic operators like Forest and Ipswich to find some commercial strategy and a rekindling of their long lost ethos of promoting youth and simple, ambitious football on the pitch. We can but hope, but as someone once said to me. Its not the failure that kills you, its the hope.

  • DavidPayne, you are so right about Brian Clough winning the European Cup with players picked from the scrap heap and obscurity but ITFC will go nowhere with our present manager rescued from obscurity and a CEO plucked from the Olympics.

  • I'm always dismayed when fans denigrate a signing before he even features. Jewell is not Clough, but Cloughie won the European Cup with players from the scrap-heap and obscurity.

  • I have watched Luke from youth days when wearing my Cobblers hat. The guy is real quality and I can tell you Tractor Boys that if we do get him we will have an exceptional player. Here's hoping.............

  • I would be very surprised if we hear any more about this, at least with the almost total lack of signings this summer , jewel will have little choice but to play some of our own youngsters , and , more importantly , he wont be able to drop them as soon as the has beens can stand up.

  • Good player, good age, good experience and was exceptional for Forest in 201011 but was weighed upon by Forest captaincy last season when the drive left the team - important player though, easy to forget he was captain of Northampton Town at 1920.

  • It's probably the same old - same old. Looks like a promising player at the right age; I’m totally confident however the powers that are @ Portman Road will scupper yet another deal. What message does any of this send to the fans? Reality check is that the only player we've signed is a lad whose team finished bottom of the league and needs surgery. Sends out a rip-roaring message of intent for the fans doesn't it. I think Evans has carried his bat home after 2 managers of his choosing incidentally have squandered thousands. He’s just looking to unload and, why not.

  • 'Chase' presumably is journalistic jargon for an agent touting the player around for 3 months who now realises his only option is to stay put or move sideways or backwards to Town.

  • No direct quote's so I will hold my breathe but having seen him a few times I am quite happy with this if it concludes to be true. However, as always I will not class this as being 'missed out on' if we don't until I see some quotes from ITFC

  • Again, no quotes, so difficult to judge -BUT- if there is any truth in this then I am relatively pleased with the effort. Chambers is a good quality player at our level so it would be a 'hats off' moment. Believe it when I see it, though..
