Blackpool v Ipswich: Ian Holloway insists that Ipswich Town fans should still feel positive about the season ahead – despite the fact his side handed the Blues a major reality check in the form of a 6-0 defeat at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

There was a major sense of deja-vu as Paul Jewell’s men – virtually a year to the day on from suffering an infamous 7-1 thrashing at Peterborough – once again proved to be the creators of their own downfall.

The Suffolk visitors gifted their in-form hosts two goals in an otherwise even first-half and then capitulated after the break as hot property Tom Ince ran riot, finishing the game with two goals and three assists.

Jewell admits the result was a ‘rude awakening’ following encouraging performances against Blackburn and Watford, but Holloway believes those associated with Ipswich shouldn’t be getting too down.

“Paul Jewell didn’t deserve that and his lads didn’t deserve that,” said the charismatic Bristolian, whose side maintained their 100% start following victories over Millwall and Leeds. “That’s as sharp a team as I’ve seen for quite a while and Paul Jewell is going to have a really good season I think.

“Ipswich look fresh, they look young, they passed it well and looked dangerous in the first half. It certainly flattered us to go in at half-time 2-0 in front.

“Goals change games, it’s all about swings in confidence, and sometimes when a third goal goes in it’s very difficult to get your momentum back.

“That was never, ever the scoreline it should have been. You get the odd freak result at this time of year and I think that was one of them.

“Obviously I’ll take it, but you can’t be false about things – I think that’s as good as anyone has played against us so far.

“There’s not much more I can say. Were we that much better than them? If they’d have scored the third goal in the game it might have been us in trouble. It’s that close at this time of year.”

  • I tend to agree with you, Tom. Although I would give the next 10 games to the younger players rather than Jewell- he has had approaching 2 seasons to prove himself already and appears to have learnt little. Hopefully we beat Carlisle tonight to improve on confidence... but I believe any good results are despite Jewell rather than because of him.

  • Holloway has always had a soft spot for ITFC - ever since Jim Magilton pipped him to the managers job following Burley's departure. I suspect - like a large portion of the fan base - Holloway is embarrassed at just how low we have sunk under the useless PJ. No matter if we beat a lower league team tonight - PJ should be sacked.

  • Holloway is a nice guy, he's just won 6-0, some interviewer has asked him about Town, he's hardly likely to gloat and say "well actually they're a rubbish side and they're going nowhere". Most of what football managers say is to be taken with a pinch of salt anyway, because they're hardly the brightest sparks in the world in the first place. The fact is that 0-6 is a terrible result, it's frankly embarrassing, but probably about right in terms of where we are right now as Blackpool are a good side. The important thing is how it affects us in the next few games. If we win the next two league matches, we'll be top 6. If. I am prepared to give PJ another ten or so games before I take a definitive view on this season. As is Evans, no doubt, which is why he has given him little if any cash to spend.

  • You can make all the nice comments you like it doesnt change the score and the fact Town seriously need to add to the squad. The defence was woeful , midfield did ok , front line non existant but what can you expect playing Chopra on his own and getting no service it needs sorting and quickly or its going to be just another mid table bore again .

  • Mr Holloways comments are of no reassurance, I have to stop living in the past and accept that we are just a small club with an average team, and just get on with it....Like Mr Evans!!!

  • Nice of him to say so -especially from one who could and, perhaps, should have been our manager. At present, we have two loan players with us. Who will bet against that being three or four by the time the window closes? Sometimes it's character that truly counts, so let's see what happens at Carlisle.

  • My concern is that Jewell will use this as an excuse to drop his younger players & bring in more loanees. He's also identified both attack & defence as being weaknesses - yet his latest loanee is another midfield player where we do seem to be doing OK. Realistically this season was going to be transitional at best but these youngsters could build a team for the future - but suspect Jewells heart is still really rooted in the outdated philosophy of Dads Army. In the meantime his tactical nous is making it difficult for those selected - if we are to play with a loan striker it is patently obvious that Chopra is not the man for the job - while Scotland who most fans regard as a better player is never given more than a cameo role. With a small squad the least you can do is pick the right players but Jewell invariably favours the players he has brought into the team - such as Chopra & JET who are given a degree of consideration not afforded to those he inherited.

  • Why would he say anything different that may just get an opponent to change things for the better. If I had just thrashed a team 6-0 I would want them to be just the same and managed just as ineptly the next time I met them.
