FORMER Ipswich Town captain Grant Leadbitter is expected to line up against his old team mates next season with his move to divisional rivals Middlesbrough close to being finalised.

Sources on Teesside have reported that the free agent midfielder is Tony Mowbray’s top target this season as the Boro boss looks to go one better after missing out on the play-offs on the final day of the season.

Leadbitter opted not to sign a new deal with Ipswich last month following a protracted ‘will-he-won’t-he’ saga which has left Town manager Paul Jewell mulling over whether he needs to bring in a replacement among his expected summer overhaul.

  • I agree with both Frank and Pencil Pete. I think it is significant that his performance levels went up towards the end of the season when he was looking to secure a new contract elsewhere. Maybe Luke Hyam will get a chance now but somehow I think not.

  • When Grant was putting himself in the shop window we all could see why Roy Keane recruited him in the first place.. Sadly however, for the most part of his stay at Town, he did not seem sufficiently motivated to perform. He will be missed but only sometimes I think.

  • No great loss, I nicknamed him 'The Crab' because he only goes sideways or backwards, His corners were woeful and his free kicks average. Maybe we can replace him with a midfielder who can actually create something rather than just contribute with penalties and a Captain who actually leads and inspires his team mates. Leadbitter was £2.6m down the swanny long before he decided to jump ship. Good riddance
