A CRACKING strike out of the blue from Jason Scotland earned Ipswich a point from a rather flat 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.

The striker didn’t appear to have a lot on when he picked up the ball on the left wing in the 59th minute.

But he cut inside England Under-21 right-back Nathaniel Clyne and hit a fantastic right-foot rocket to net his eighth of the season.

Scotland’s goal was out of keeping with a lacklustre match that distinctly had an end-of-seson feel to it.

But it could have been worse after a 36th minute goal from Norwich City loanee Chris Martin gave Crystal Palace a half-time lead at Selhurst Park.

Martin rounded off a fine move from the home side involving Clyne and Sean Scannell to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead which didn’t really tell the story of the first half.

Town bossed possession for the vast majority of the 45 minutes and created far more chances, albeit largely from distance.

Scotland was inches away from getting on the end of Aaron Cresswell’s teasing cross before a clever free-kick routine ended with Grant Leadbitter shooting just wide.

Jay Emmnanuel-Thomas got in on the long-range act but he could find no way past Palace keeper Julian Speroni.

And on 23 minutes, and against the run of play, the hosts should have taken the lead when Wilfried Zaha’s smart reverse pass released ex-Town midfielder Darren Ambrose but he was denied by a strong block from the onrushing Arran Lee-Barrett.

Town continued to make the better chances, a diving Speroni saving well from Jason Scotland’s volley before Palace broke the deadlock in the 36th minute.

Ipswich had controlled possession without really getting behind their opponents who proved to be more lethal in front of goal.

As in recent matches, Town struggled at the start of the second half before Scotland’s shock equaliser.

It was just what the visitors needed but neither side were able to produce the necessary cutting edge to win the match.

Ambrose shot straight at Lee-Barrett from the edge of the area while at the other end a short corner released Lee Martin whose powerful drive was deflected off Owen Garvan but flew just wide of the far post in the 69th minute.

Scannell fired wide when released by Garvan before Carlos Edwards’ deep cross was met by Daryl Murphy who headed onto the roof of the net.

Town had a scare in the 81st minute when Zaha found himself one-on-one with Cresswell and went down in the area but the referee waved play on.

It would have been harsh on the left-back and Ipswich with neither side deserving anything more than a point.

Though it was the Blues who almost won it when Edwards’ injury-time piledriver flew just over.

TEAM NEWS

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Lee Martin and Andy Drury have all been restored to the Ipswich Town team for today’s trip to Crystal Palace.

The trio were rested for Monday’s home defeat by Leicester City but all three return at the expense of Lee Bowyer, Josh Carson and Ryan Stevenson.

Carson and fellow youngster Luke Hyam are not in the 16-man squad while Jason Scotland is again preferred to Michael Chopra.

Richard Wright is injured so young US keeper Cody Cropper, who is out of contract in the summer, is on the bench.

Former Town midfielder Darren Ambrose is back in the starting line-up for Palace, alongside ex-Town youth Stuart O’Keefe, while Paul McShane starts at centre-back.

Lewis Price and Owen Garvan are both on the bench against their former employers.

  • Cyril, the only investigation that you can be referring to, is the one involving the criminal activities of those working for various newspapers, and also the collusion with the Metropolitan Police. I shall not comment further as it is not necessary to, although we all know (or should know) the names of the various publications involved. Not the EADT as far as I am aware? None of that has anything at all, in any way, to do with verbatim comments reported by Dave Gooderham initially, and confirmed in this thread, which you still doubt. QED my comments. You are wittingly, or unwittingly, calling him a liar, which is pretty rude where I come from, if someone clearly is not lying.

  • Pray tell me Kevin, where is my latest statement wrong. Gooderham does work for the eadt and there is an investigation into freedom of the press going on. No need to be rude just answer as you clearly are an educated man?.

  • Cyril, being wrong is nothing to be ashamed of. We all make mistakes. Repeating the comment, when you have been shown to be wrong, though, is simply a sign of utter stupidity, as well as being a sign of very bad manners, very bad manners indeed. Your own comments say far more about the level of your understanding than anyone else could. The greatest irony being that you are probably the biggest single moaner on the entire site!

  • Cyril It is not a case of believing what is in the paper. I refer to the statement by Dave Gooderham at the end of your posted comment. [Paul Jewell made the comments regarding Byron Lawrence at the pre-match press conference last Thursday. DG] I assume from your comments below means that that you are calling the man a liar. Is that correct?

  • Quote from this very site: 'Paul Jewell confirming that he plans to give the 16-year-old ‘some game time’ during the final four matches.' Nothing to do with the Palace match. I which people would read what is written and the actual quotes rather than the stories written 'loosely' around them

  • Well sussex tractor boy, if you want to believe everything you read in the paper, ask yourself who is the stupid one. I ask myself about some of PJ decisions but at the end of the day accept he knows far more about the game than I do.

  • Kevin , i couldn't agree with you more , what exactly is this manager on ??? at least he could use the very slim excuse of our outside chances of making a play-off spot over the past month or so , but now it is revealed to be absolute and abject indifference.

  • I think you will find, Cyril, that when papers use quotation marks to signify someone is saying something, it is actually legally dangerous to just make those words up- law kind of gets in the way. Jewell has been contradicting himself for 14 months now. Currently on youth player selection, why players aren't in the side and his intent to rotate or give youth a chance. Previously on solidifying contracts, ensuring players are not loanees, not letting contracts run out, rubbishing friendlies as pointless and then playing them instead of reserve matches (and then claoiming they are full of reason), among many. I have still to hear a valid positive that Jewell offers for the future- because, despite all the 'experience' that is professed he brings to the job, it seems to me and pretty much all I speak to, he is still naive and very much learning on the job from the bottom. Unfortunately, learning means stopping making the same mistakes, and he doesn't. *Despairs*

  • Cyril, I am afraid that Jewell says so many things, most of which are utterly incompatible with each other, and if he acts like that with the players, then he will not be respected, and the confusion created will cause him not to be respected. Your inability to accept this, based on the facts of the matter, are symptomatic of the very failings in your thought processes, which cause you to label those with greater awareness and perception than yourself as losers. As they say, if the cap fits, Cyril, then feel free to wear it.
