HURTING Luke Hyam is going to use the disappointment and frustration at being dropped as a driving force to win his place back with the Blues.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The local lad and fans’ favourite was bombed from the Town team after February’s 3-0 defeat at Brighton and has played just 12 minutes in the subsequent 10 matches.

And while the clamour for Hyam to return to the side in the final four games grows ever louder, the 20-year-old has no complaints over his handling by manager Paul Jewell.

The midfielder said: “It has been a bit frustrating over the last few weeks and I have been disappointed – but that is the same for any player not in the team.

“I trust the manager, he is very experienced and has managed in the Premier League.

“Hopefully if I keep working hard in training I might get a bit of game-time.

“The manager watches training every day and he picks the team based on people impressing there.”

With Town in 15th, many supporters believe this is a perfect time to blood the former Town trainee with a view to him being an integral part of the team next season.

The hard-working Hyam, who has been part of the 18-man matchday squad in recent games, knows he still has plenty of room for improvement.

He explained: “I have done afternoon training sessions here improving my passing and awareness and hopefully it is paying off. But I am only going to improve by playing games.

“I’m not too far away from it. “But I want to get on the bench or even start – that is my aim.”

And in a direct message to Town fans, Hyam added: “I appreciate all the support from the fans, but I want to impress the manager as he is the one who picks the team.

“I just want to play as much as I can before the end of the season and then come back for next year flying. I want to be in the Ipswich team from day one next season.”

  • Chris, as usual your points are made in a polite way, although I couldn't disagree with you more about Hyam. I would have him in my time ahead of Leadbitter every day of the week, and would say the same of Hyam being ahead of Murphy, although I appreciate that play in different positions. Why? Hyam was selected when the chips were really down, after being out for ages, yet still came in, and made a difference. Leadbitter, when captain, threw in the towell at half-time, and has only performed better when either playing for a move, or having already agreed one. I would give you 100-1 on Leadbitter being here in August by the way. I appreciate it is all about opinions, but when the chips were down Hyam stood up, and Captain Grant went missing. Says it all for me

  • @ Chris Hampshire@ : It appears we agree on something! If Jewell continues the current form and points gaining into, and on from, the beginning of next season it would be churlish of me to do otherwise. Problem is, I have minimal doubt that he won't. I have no faith in him in the slightest and think the signings he brings in (or not) during the summer. the undoubtable loans he gets and then the poor form he will create next season will result (if reality hits home to ME) in Jewell being sacked before his contract is renewed next season. Now, like you, if this poor managerial ability does a 180 and he starts to grow a sembelance of talent, then I will have to hold my hands up. Don't think I'll need to though, and resent the fact that he will be at the club for 2 whole years and only presided over a constant decline. We will both know in the next 8 months, I guess....

  • @Brian and Spartacus: you may have read the other day that I always thought things were going to get worse before getting better. I think we’ve been through the ‘worst’ with the relegation form during the first half of this season; and I really do believe we are now well on the getting better curve. I expect a few more blips but not another spell of sustained poor performances anywhere near as bad as earlier in the season; if there is then I will have to concede I got it wrong! I would like to see the younger players given more playing time, but if (and we don’t anything for certain yet) Leadbitter and Murphy are still with Ipswich next season then they will have to be first choice over Hyam and Carson.

  • @Chris Hampshire, it is all very well to look at the season in partition but have you forgotten the earlier period when Jewell could not squeeze a draw out of his team and that was realistic relegation form !!!!!

  • @ Chris Hampshire (damn, we need a proper forum for this :-) ): Jewell stated quite clearly a few months ago that he should be judged by 'the league position' at the end of the season, essentially not by a run of bad games. I'm assuming the alternate applies? Or are we able to pick and choose. As for a run of good form, good. I want us to win, but if you are seriously suggesting not giving our younger players game time over the 'not gonna be here next season' crew, then that sounds pretty un-Ipswich Football Club to me....

  • I agree with most of what has been said here, I think what backs up the fans support for Hyam is the fact that England scouts were watching him and apparently have a very high opinion of him. I can’t understand why Paul Jewell dropped him, he did have one or two slightly under par performances by his standards, but he was never going to play like he did against West Ham in every game. The important fact is of course, is his potential, it’s pretty obvious to most people that he has bags of that. He is, at the moment, part of our future and most managers would be encouraging him by including him in the first team as frequently as possible. Paul Jewell like it or not, is our manager and will be our manager at the start of next season. I hope that he builds a strong youthful side, in my opinion, that’s the only way forward. What worries me is, I think that he actually feels safe surrounded by mature players, it seems to give him some sort of psychological gratification. I hope for ITFC’s sake I’m wrong. If he does go with a majority of older players next season, then I think that he will pay the same penalty as he has paid this season and Mr Evans will have to act early on in the season to put things right. We have to wait, we all want ITFC to succeed, as long as they do, I for one will take my hat off to the manager, who ever he is.

  • @I am Spartacus: if playoff place winning performance since early December and possibly automatic promotion performance in the last 15 games is ignored then I guess it is difficult to point to anything that instils any faith in Jewell.

  • @ Chris Hampshire: Thing is, I suspect Jewell will say training is very competitive to ensure players are match fit (which is a cover for there being no reserve matches), but nothing replaces 'match' fitness. Nothing. As for the friendlies Jewell plays during the season, bearing in mind he said pre-season friendlies are pointless, he again tied himself up in his own waffle- and now, if Hyam was selected again, he would probably need a couple of games to get near match fitness, which (with a possibly slightly lower performance) is an instant cover for Jewell. Can anyone say what Jewell has done to instill any faith in him for the future? Anything? At all?

  • I share Luke Hyhams frustration & as the early bird season ticket discount has now passed Marcus Evans has lost 2 more season ticket holders. There is some very good local football being played in Suffolk currently plus the opportunity to take in some Premier League matches around the country as attendances are much lower these days.

  • Chris Hampshire - if you read my comments you'll see that my views are not based on the league position but rather the performances of Hyam when selected to play in MATCHES. My other main point is that I am not aware of any other manager that places the emphasis of selection on hopw players do in the comfy surrounds of training but rather proving it in competative matches when it actually counts !!!!

  • @Old Timer: I wonder if using the league position as proof of your supposition is a bit specious. What is needed is evidence to show that things would be better if selection was not based on performance in training.

  • I think the treatment of this young lad has been an absolute disgrace and is embarrassing to Ipswich Town and its supporters. This young lad (with Tommy Smith) practically saved Paul Jewell's job, yet how is he rewarded. HE IS DROPPED and not to be seen for 2 or so months. I honestly believe, and its hard for me to say this but i don't think we will see much of him next season either. I have just renewed my season ticket for 26th consecutive season but i have to admit after reading some of the stories published in the eadt i'm beginning to wonder why. I feel its going to be yet another season of bad performances and under achieving.

  • Luke, I commend you on your dignity and also your ability to impress the England Under 21s, but not Jewell. He is more impressed by Leadbitter, despite saying that from now on it will be sign, or be sold. Yes, I would also think that to be inconsistent as well. Old Timer is right, training is only relevant in the context of match performance, and I would credit you and Drury with saving Jewell his job. Loyalty is only one way in his eyes.

  • This policy of secting players on their performance in training has been totally discredited - the proof of which lies in our position of 15th in the league. That's why the fans are so frustrated with Jewell - we do not see the training on which he bases his selection policy - but we all remember Hyams vibrant display as we destroyed West Ham 5-1 plus other matches when his all action preformances endeared him to the crowd & was in stark contrast to the laboured efforts of Jewells Dads Army !!!!!!!! Unless somebody can confirm that Ferguson & Wenger select their teams from what they see in training rather than in the heat of battle then I will continue to consider that this is just another example of this mans total ineptitude.

  • Hyam shows the maturity that Jewell referred to in 1 startling (to Jewell anyway) comment 'But I am only going to improve by playing games'. I know it, I suspect all that read in this site know it. Only one person seems to be blind to the reality. I hate Jewell being our manager.
