IPSWICH Town manager Paul Jewell says Derby County counterpart Nigel Clough will have to lower his valuation of striker Steve Davies if the player is to make a switch to Portman Road.

Davies – now entering the final year of his contract – has put in a transfer request and made no secret of the fact that he wants to move nearer his London-based family.

The EADT and Ipswich Star understands that Clough has put a £1m price tag on his player, while Jewell is only willing to pay £500,000.

“Steve Davies is a player that I took to Derby and one that admire, but it all comes down to cost,” said Jewell.

“I’ve spoken to Nigel Clough over the summer about the fee and it’s far in excess of what we would want to pay. Don’t ask me what it is because that’s between the two clubs, but it’s too much and I haven’t got that amount of money.

“There’s not a bottomless pit of money so I’ve got to be prudent in the way I work.”

Meanwhile, the Blues boss revealed that he did make a bid for Doncaster Rovers defender George Friend – who is on the verge of making a £250,000 switch to Middlesbrough.

“Dean Saunders rang me and said that Middlesbrough and Forest had made a bid for him,” said Jewell.

“We did enquire after him, in fact we made a bid for him, but he’s going to Middlesbrough.”

Regarding left-back Aaron Cresswell, who was the subject of an enquiry from Aston Villa earlier this week, he added: “There’s no update from what I said on Wednesday. We’ve had no further contact from Aston Villa and we don’t encourage any.

“I don’t want this to become an issue.”

With the Blues boss still hopeful of signing French teenage triallist Cheick Kourouma – the club currently contacting a host of his former teams over possible compensation issues – Jewell said: “We need some players that’s for sure. We need some physicality in the team, we need some power.

“I’ve been frustrated in a number of attempts to bring people in this summer, but I’ll always carry on trying to improve this squad.”

  • Wont get anywhere by trying to do it on the cheap. Our transfer policy was a disaster last season with good money being thrown around. We dont seem able to compete with most clubs in this division, or the players just dont want to come here. Another season of mediocrate seem looming large unless we decide to splash some cash.

  • Mr Jewell. The tribunal fee YOU paid to Davis' last club was in the region of 425k so why would they sell him to you for 500k even if he is in the last year of his contract? He's only got better since then, injury prone but still got a goal ration of 1 in 2.5 games which isn't too shabby. Once fit he'll easily bag 20 plus a season if he stays fit and you want him for 500k...get real, put a proper offer on the table or shut up. Or wise up, why not say we'll have him for 500k now, then add on a clause for goals or appearances see if the cash strapped Rams will take that?

  • Is it because Jewell hopes to sign a certain young Sunderland striker on loan ?

  • I think the result yesterday demonstrates just how much PJ needs to get some better quality players in but I am not confident that this will happen with the management of club seemingly only prepared to look at basement bargains. Even then I think George Friend at 250K is a big opportunity missed. Little of the cash raised from selling Wickham was put to investing back into playing staff and I fear the same will happen if Cresswell is sold, probably for about 3 million with long term add on's. Mr Clegg keeps saying how much ambition the club has but from his actions I'm not at all convinced.

  • Why spend all summer trying to knock them down , there are plenty of strikers in division one who would fit the bill for us at 500 grand , and plenty with the pace and power he says he needs. I will predict now that our defence will once again be our main weakness we need a powehouse in central defence who can lead those around him , this would have been my main brief to the scouts last season , jewell never seems to identify his areas of concern untill they come up and hit his nose.

  • SAME as last year... Bla,Bla,Bla.. When will Evans,Clegg-less and our woefull Jewell learn that we target players and try to get them for peanut's and end up loseing them. Of course clubs and players will go to bigger offering's dont we try to get as much for our players... I am afraid to say it again that untill there our change's at Ipswich Town f.c. Wont be going any where soon............

  • I thought Jewell never discussed transfers publicly, yet he has done nothing else all summer. Sack him.
